Towing 17000lbs with auto trans

So I am in the market for a 40' toy hauler. The one I have my eye on comes in at about 17000 lbs wet. My trans is the 48re auto in a 2007 4x4. Motor will most likely remain stock. At most, MAYBE a Smarty Jr. I have put on a turbo back exhaust to remove the cat (somebody tried to steal mine), and have a less restrictive muffler.

Before I ever tow this thing, I am putting in a triple disk converter/valve body, billet input shaft, a stronger flex plate, and a high capacity, deep trans pan.

Question is. With these trans mods, should my trans be fine while towing this? I know a manual is the best choice, but that is not a option.

I would get a trans temp gauge installed.

X2.

Plus I'd look into getting gauges for boost, EGT, and fuel.

I just pulled 18,000 with mine and it was a big struggle ONLY because the stock converter was slipping/stalling so bad on takeoff. Once the truck got going it was perfectly fine though. With the mods you are looking at I would say you will be fine. A better converter is definitely on my list.....

Even with my stocktrans, I'd hook that up and pull it with no worries.

I pull a 37ft in the mountains (about 15,500 wet). The truck is pretty much stock other then a Smarty on lvl 3. I have never had any trans issues. Seeing your is a toyhauler don't be afraid of putting it in 4 low if you are going slow. Pulling into sites crawling in 2 high gets the trans temps up really really fast. Depending on if you are near mountains, definatly consider an exhaust brake. I have thanked the EB gods more than once.

I have a 40' Toy Hauler that comes in at 16500. I pulled it lots through out the remainder of the summer on my stocker. It pulls just fine. I will be going the Georend route here shortly.

Wow, what does that kind of work cost? I would think thousands...

Thanks for the reply's. I will be putting gauges on it also. I have considered a Fass fuel filter/water separator also for the better filtration. But as far as engine mods go, I will probably just leave it stock. Like I said, MAYBE a Smarty Jr at the very most.

Another question. When putting is a lower stall, more efficient converter, higher pressure valve body. Aren't the rest of the clutch's and bands going to get allot more pressure put against them? Why wouldn't I want to up grade those? But no trans shop has recommended that I do that. I have heard of people "burning up" the clutches/bands. What causes this?

My truck has 17000 miles on it right now.

DO your tranny mods, Very important. I use to tow a 14000lb dump trailer everyday for work. I Didn't ever think anything would happen to my tranny and then at 80000km the tranny died. 5000 bucks later I got a new one which is built with single disc converter and valve body etc. Dodge did not warrent my tranny because I had a Edge box, which had only been on there for a week runing lev 1. Thanks to Stupid Langley Chrysler and there Crappy service team!!! Anyways, I do not think you will need Billet shafts unless your planing to add some major power to your rig. But you might as well spent the money now in case you every decide to play with some power!!!
good luck

If you have 4.10 gears you will be good to go. If you do upgrade the tranny don't get a real tight converter, you will have a hard time getting the loads moving. Pulling that weight you will need a billet input shaft, with heavy weights the TC lockup will snap it. A good VB with increased pressures will help the clutches hold together. A couple of things you need to get though, band strut, anchor, etc. Talk with Dave at Goerend, he will hook you up.

410 gear would help, I only have 373 so that was probably a big issue with me.
