My dad used to work on engines that size early in his career. He says they used to stick cotton in their ears and go into the engine while it was running sometimes to check things out. There is an old photo of his standing next to a cracked piston that he'd removed from an engine and he could just about fit into the crack.

I used to work on gas compressors and engines. We had a few engines that if a piston scored a cylinder or something, I could actually climb up in the cylinder and clean it up. And I am not a little guy.

But nothing like those - that was very interesting.
