Fuel additives???

Can someone help me to undertand why we need an additive. I read the owners manual and it says an additive is not required. So why spend the extra money on dumping 2 stroke oil in the tank? Have you noticed any measurable improvements? What exactly does the oil do?
I have a 5.9.

ULSD does not have the lubrication to maintain injectors and other parts... There are many different products out there and a recent study ranked them best to worse.

If you're skeptical, dump some 2-stroke in, you can clearly hear the difference in engine noise within minutes.

I am using the 2 stroke as we speak but ordered some Opti Lube that ONE QUART will treat 700 gallons of fuel. It Ranked # 2 and #4 on that recent study. It is an actual DIESEL FUEL supplement.... I will use that over the 2 stroke if they are comparable....

I don't know man, looks like that study was done by GM guys.... I think they were testing the lubrication on the Short Bus they ride in. Just kidding! There's some really good information there, thanks for the link!

After reading the NUMEROUS threads also on this topic I thought I would give it a try. Put 1 quart Havoline TCW3 in for a full tank. Drove a 1/2 tank worth of it so far on the highway down for elk hunting this weekend. Got 18 mpg going down and 20 back on the overhead. I think the difference was Pissy weather down and more cruise control time coming back. Not too bad for a basically unloaded truck and 10K miles on the odo. I bought some Wally world TCW3 while I was in S. Oregon since there was one nearby. Will try that next. I also have some Stanadyne to throw in every couple of tanks with it. I was a Stanadyne/MMO mix up to this point. Jury is still out.

Like I said in another forum you have to be your own judge on the studies. Stanadyne has one also that measures multiple factors including HFRR, lubricity, Cetane increase and pour point for multiple brands and it doesn't necessarily synce with other studies. Be your own seat of the pants judge.

Personally, Iv been using Walmart brand 2 stroke for about six months and have noticed a quieter idle on my 05.
A qt per fillup.
As long as there is TCW 3 on the bottle, any brand should be ok.
Iv heard that synthetic wont work.

Use 1 quart bottle per ~30-33 gallons of fuel at fillup. Any brand that says TCW-3 2-stroke type oil. Usually it will also say for outboard boat motors also

I ordered and received my Opti Lube but the company refuses to answer calls or E-mails.. I think it's probably snake oil and they probably funded the origional tests!!

Here you go...

Why add a additive?? Because if the fuel hasn't had a additive package added to it it will cause more wear on your expensive pumps... That is why to use a good additive...
