For you guys with the torque converter lock up switch, do you leave it locked up during up shifts or do you have to anticipate a shift, turn it off, than back on? Just curious before i go that route.

 

I wouldn't recommend locked shifts unless the trans is really beefed up. Unless you do it very carefully it is not good for any of the clutch packs. These transmissions are designed to slip a little between shifts, no defueling needed unlike an Allly trans or the like, so removing any more "slip factor" puts it all on the clutches instead of letting the unlocked converter take some too.

 

I only lock mine when I'm in the gear I want to stay in for a while. 2nd lock is nice gear for slow mountain roads. 4th lock is OK for 40-50 MPH on flat ground for a long distance.

No need to thrash the tranny by shifting in lockup, especially the lower gears. You'll see. If there is an abusive bang when shifting, don't do it.

The above advice is sound. I only do the unlocked shifts when racing. Mostly the switch is good to keep the TC from locking and unlocking when in one gear.

 

Since I have a stock low mileage 48RE and am "chicken", I just use it to slow down with the Exh brake(better control than the transloc). Sometimes when pulling in 1 and 2, but not shifting..........

If you can shift a std tranny with the skinny petal you can run locked on the TC with no damage with an auto trans!

 

I never keep the TC locked when shifting! I only use the lockup button when I have selected a gear other than OD and need to keep the TC locked, the tranny cool, and engine rev's up. E.g. climbing a long grade while towing.

Yes, you need a 33Ohm resistor between ground and pin 7 on the transmission connector.

This is how I operate mine. The top one is the exhaust brake switch, bottom is a momentary pushbutton for the TC. My BD Overdrive LockOut is controlled by the Tow/Haul button.
