I have noticed this on my 06. I'm even getting soot residue on the rear bumper corner and lower rear quarter panel. I just noticed it recently, now has ~7000 miles. My 03 has 25000 miles and no sooty residue at all. Even inside the tailpipe you can wipe your finger inside and there is hardly any soot.
My 03 has no converter on it but the 06 does (both trucks are stock). I guess with the converter it burns so much cleaner and produces so much less emissions you see soot..... Yeah Right. I'm starting to think the converter has the opposite effect!
The only explaination I have is that I have put ULS fuel in the 06 but have only used LS fuel in the 03. Just not sure of the cause but it is very suspicious.
I wonder if all trucks of the same model year just vary or if it's the fact that the 06 is just more powerful and burns more fuel, bigger injectors, longer injection event, whatever gives it more power ???
I am curious to hear what others have to say about this issue.

My 05 has done that since it was new. Ulsd hasn't seemed to make any difference. If it goes more than 1200-1500 miles between washes the rear quarter will be black as coal.

I have noticed that my bumper and lower quarter panel have been getting kinda black since i started using the ULSD. Still seems to run great, but there is a little more soot than before.

Pull the converter, take the truck out on the road and mash the gas (fuel). The soot that's backed up behind the cat will turn day into night.

My previous '04 and my new '06 both do this. Normal for diesel. The '07 new emission vehicles will be clean. I have duals on mine now and both are sooty. But I like it!!!

ok, this soot in/on the tailpipe phenomenon is gonna happen when you burn any diesel fuel whether it be ULSD, LSD or high sulfur rig fuel, some of you guys and gals aren't washing your trucks often enough! This may be a good indicator of who really does and doesn't love their CTD!...

It's not the fuel IMO, it's the different exhaust tip and muffler on your magnaflow exhaust. The factory pipe is mitered to clear the gases as it exits. When you go to a straight cut pipe or especially a bigger tip, the smoke doesn't clear as quickly, so you get more soot around the exit of the exhaust and down the side of your truck. I have experienced this on all my trucks.

Did you just remove your stock muffler last November? That thing is a soot trap. In the stock system you will get less soot to the tailpipe.

Ny truck leaves a trail down the back quarter and onto the bumper. My 04.5 did it, my 06 did it, and my 07 does it.
