Which synthetic oil besides Amsoil??
I use Amsoil 5w30 HDD year round and it's held up well so far. Being I changed it out in Oct I plan to do a UOA come April to see how it did over the winter and see if it will last until Oct of 2008.
Additionally,
Not to start a war on this, but recently a member on TDR did an oil analysis which was an excellent read. He broke each oil down, and analyzed the different types of additives in the oil. Sad to say the Amsoil 15W40 with the CJ rating scored low on this scale. I wish I had access to that write up, maybe someone will post it.
Now everyone hold on for the flame wars....

Rotella 5-40 synthetic with 7,500 mile oil-change intervals. Rotella 5-40 makes a big difference on cold starts compared to regular 15-40. Are the other 5-40 synthetics less smelly than Rotella?
I just dropped in Mobil One Turbo Diesel 5W-40. Works great, but I am in So. Cal so cold weather is only 40 degrees in the morning so I can not tell you how it starts when it is really cold.

I use the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5w-40 which is CI-4 rated. This oil is essentially the same as the Mobil Delvac 1 product which I believe is now only available as CJ-4. I can buy the Turbo Diesel stuff at Wally World for $22+ for a gallon jug. I will be doing a UOA on this oil in the near future. Previously I have used the Amsoil HDD and AME products as well as the Delo400 15w-40 CI-4 oil. Usually I run the synthetics to 10k miles doing oil analysis at 4k intervals. I also use Donaldson ELF oil filters with no bypass filtration.

I was using the Valvoline PB when it was a CI, they went to CJ, when I run out the miles of my last oil change of CI, I'm going to Amsoil.
If you are not thinking Amsoil, then the Valvoline PB comes in EXTREME, which is a synthetic, it would be the only other I personally would use other than the Amsoil. None of the other synthetics are readily available in my area. I would have to order them and have them delivered, since Amsoil delivers, has been around, ussed and tested for a long time, it seems to me to be the better choice. I also have their bypass system, works great.

Didn’t the API change the definition of “synthetic” to include hydrocraked oils? (Group 3) This way oil companies could charge synthetic rates for cheaper to produce oils?
I ran Rotella synthetic for a while, but them Amsoil got me when I bought their bypass setup.
I think you’ll be fine no-matter what appropriate oil you run so long as you change it when you should.

I still have a bad taste in my mouth from Amsoil (no I didn't drink it), from a few years back when I had a few blow-ups on my two-stroke toys when running an Amsoil syn. 2t. I'm sure it's good stuff now, but I just can't bring myself to run any.
