you are right, i just went to the dodge website, hemi AT= 45rfe, not 48re. wouldn`t make sense to me. one engine redlines at 3,200 rpm, and the other at about 5,000 rpm. i dont think you could use the same tranny for each, but i`ve been known to be wrong

2003 2500 HO 4x4 48RE
15,000 miles
Tow 8000# 5ver twice a month; 250+ miles each time.
Jake Brake installed by dealer, who promised to warranty it and tranny after he found out he shouldn't have installed the Jake.
No other mods.
No leaks, no problems, no odd shifts so far, and great braking action down to 50mph.

Re: Survey: 48RE

Year:03
Model:3500 srw
Mileage:13k
Gearing:3something I'm not going outside to look
Item Towed:35+ ft towbox trailer( http://www.giantrv.com/products/warrior/warrior.htm)11-13+k pull trailer depending on if I put my Jeep inside. It's got about a 1300lb tongue.
Problems:light deal caused by me (pretty sure-warranty) and quick connect @ the tranny cooler (warranty 2 days ago - problem from manufacturer per dealer) lost about a half quart.
Mods:none
Other:I pull my trailer a lot. First 4k of 5k was pulling. I've said it a lot. I pull from about sea level 320miles to Mammoth area (over 8500 at Deadmans). I go through a desert and pull major grades in 100+ degree heat. I keep the ac pumping and floor it. I have a warranty and would rather break it while it's in effect. I've also pulled when the temps were in the single digits (water lines on trailer froze). I get about 9 mpg towing. Usually keep it under 80mph. Free oil changes for life .

Mostly on Rams-w-Gas. He said the 48RE is a "glorified"Mopar 727. He said the main cause for melt down is fluid temps and that there is a check ball in the line that sticks and causes no fluid circulation to the rear of the tranny. For the heck of it he looked at mine and was really suprised at the improvement they made regarding the line size and the size of the cooler which he said was huge.
FWIW-please give me some input. I plan on "bombing" this truck as soon as funds allow. I cannot imagine going back to a gas daily driver.
Also if there are easy/cheap/effective mods to the 48RE please advise me. - Thanks
I'd say hes FOS. The tranny has not been around long enough to be going to a Ma and Pa tranny shop "one a month". Most of these new 48re's are still under warranty and would be going back to the dealer. Also, the only gasser that sees this tranny is the v-10 if I'm not mistaken.

They are having problems with the Hemi autos from what I have heard but that tranny is a 5-spd auto, the same as the 1/2 ton unit from what I hear. Unless you are doing big hp/tq numbers you will probably be fine with a 48re.

Just my $0.02

I was in for oil at a very large and experienced 5 star Dealer. Asked my service advisor who is a friend and straight shooter, if he had seen 48 R failures. He said, nope.
