Well, they hold 12 quarts. So I just make sure that I pour in 12 quarts (including filter) and I could care less what the dipstick says.

Just like PoorMansCat said just put in 12 qts and don't check the level.

Check it after it has been run and has set for at least 5 minutes. Pull the stick one time and read the level. Works for me.

Yea same here! ANd it needs to set 30 minutes after warm to get an accurate reading!

Sounds like your dip stick tube is full of crud. Maybe even your oil pan, etc etc. Mine reads so clean when I change it I can barely see where the oil level is at.

When I change oil, I get the engine good and hot and then let it drain for a day. My oil then stays clean for 2000 miles. It especially stays clean since the emissions system fell off and no more regens or erg is being pumped back into that motor.

You know, I don't think I've ever checked mine after an oil change. I just dump 3 gallons in and forget about it.....

LOL

My samples still say good to go, and I don't use much at all between changes.

If you point the side you read down when you put the dip stick in you should have no problem reading it when you pull it out. I had the same issue.

Mine does that too, but if you look carefully at the dipstick you'll see that the "smeared" oil part looks different from the oil level part. The smeared part only coats maybe half the dipstick and the true oil level coats the entire dipstick, side-to-side. There is a distinct line or change in the oil pattern between the smear and the oil level.

I usually pour in just shy of 3 gallons of oil when I do an oil change (usually hold back maybe half a pint) and it puts the oil level right in the middle of the word "SAFE" on the dipstick when checked 5 minutes after shutdown on a level surface. I check my oil level at every fill-up just to keep an eye on things and make sure it's not losing/burning oil or "making oil." So far I've never had a problem but with 155K miles I figure it can't hurt to give it a quick it check along with the rest of my fluids while I'm pumping fuel. It's not like I have anything better to do while waiting for the tank to fill!

Ditto. I just let it sit overnight and leave the hood up so I remember to check it in the morning (just in case Valvoline shorted me).

Why do you think you have gunk in the engine?

If you change oil as scheduled before the oil breaks down there will be no gunk build up. The oil has detergents that remove it.
