Steering wheel fills loose

I'm not having any problem with the driveability of the truck but my steering wheel feels like it has come loose a little. I would like to take the horn cover off of the steering wheel to try and tighten it. I have followed the steering linkage down to the floor board and everything looks good. I am just worried about damaging the oporability of the air bag or even worse discharging it while removing this cover. I was just wondering if anyone has removed this cover or had this problem. The truck has 86,000 miles on it and I just recently had to have two injectors replaced. After it was returned to me from the dealer is when I started noticeing this. I don't know if the tech was hanging on my steering wheel or if it was just a coincidence. The truck is out of warranty.

I have never removed the steering wheel and I am not an expert......but I would imagine the procedure to remove the steering wheel, first involves disabling the airbag system. To avoid having it discharge in your face at close range.
Have you checked under the the dash to make sure the steering column is tight and that the steering joint at the firewall is not bad ?

Loose steering wheel

Yes i checked the steering joint just above the firewall and everything else on the steering linkage I could get my hands on and everything feels tight. It is just the steering wheel itself that feels loose.

Once you remove the airbag, you'll have to have a steering wheel puller. Once the steering wheel is removed you'll probably find some lose bolts on the mounting plate where the steering wheel mounts. They seem to have an aversion to using lock nuts - it saves them a few cents on each vehicle. Using a lock-tite compound doesn't work as well as lock nuts.
I had the same thing happen on GM pickup several years ago when they worked over the front brakes and front end. They used a bar to lock the steering wheel to the brake pedal to hold the brake pedal immobile. They loosened up my steering wheel as a result.
Could it be your steering wheel tilt is loose instead of the actual steering wheel?

Disconnect the batteries would be the simplest way to do it.
