Squeals, smokin' belt

Just last week I had the water pump replaced. Now today I had a small squealing sound coming from the upper belt pulleys, smoke coming through the ventilation system for only a couple minutes, then it quit. I ran the A/C hoping to keep that from binding and had no more problems going home. Any ideas?
What concerns me is I had a new tensioner and belt put on a year ago, new water pump and now...? What kind of systemic issues am I dealing with here?
Thanks, Rick

According to my mechanic, something caused the serpentine belt to slide forward, scuffing it's front edge, causing smoke, and squealing. If there was a pulley bound up, it didn't show yesterday, so it's off we go to Montana, today. We haven't had the symptoms again. Honest shop. Attwood and Son in Lancaster, CA.

My belt walked on me a couple years ago. Took me a while to figure it out as I was hearing what sounded like a supercharger whine coming from under the hood. When I did notice it, the belt had walked toward the front about two teeth on the pulleys. Replaced it and so far so good.
