Soot on turbo blades

I noticed putting my AFE intake on today that all the turbo blades had a faint black spot of soot im guessing covering about half of the blade in the same spot of each of them.

What is this and is it normal?

not normal, grab the front of the compressor shaft and check for play.

I have had that faint black soot on my 01, my 04.5, my wifes 04.5, and my 06. After over 824,000 combined miles - not a single turbo problem. Keep on trucking.

Yeah, but expect to find a little side-to-side and up-down play. I think that play goes away when the oil pressure comes up around the shaft/bearings.

The play you really want to be concerned with is in-and-out movement. There should be none.

I was checking mine the other day and noticed the same thing - just a little black stuff.. I have no wiggle at all in mine - side to side or in and out - none at all. I took some brake cleaner and sprayed the fins off, and I'm gonna check them out this weekend and if they are dirty again, then out comes the K&N drop in.

A little oi lin the K&N goes a long way. It doesn't need to be dripping! I always set mine in the sun for awhile to let it dry/soak in too!

It's normal to see just a little haze of gray on the compressor blades just as long as that is only where it is. I have the same on mine and I noticed it before I installed the AFE PGM7. No dirt or dust was in my intake tube.

It is ok to have very little radial movement (up and down), however thrust (in and out) movement is no good. Once under load the radial will somewhat balance, but when you hammer down if you have thrust movement the impeller wants to come forward......BAD NEWS!!!
