Smog test

OK.........I've heard there's no such thing as a dumb question' so here goes.

I'm thinking of buying my first diesel (Ram 2500, 2003 to 2005, quad cab
Cummings HO).

I live in Ca. and may buy out of state.

Do you have to have smog checks on diesels like you do on regular gas engines and if so how can I find out if the vehicle would pass Ca. requirements, and if not, how much extra money I would have to spend to do so.

I just looked at two window stickers I have on hand 2005 Dodge Neon and for my 04.5 truck and nether one states it would or would not complie with CA. It states it complies with federal requirements but nothing specific to specific states or regions.

I would not trust anything a sales person tells you on this until you talk to the DMV of CA as most sales people will tell you anything ---sure it will work yeah right and then you are stuck with a 40K truck you cannot register

No smog checks on diesels in CA. See http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm

If you do buy out of state make sure it either has more than 7500 miles or you get one with the California emissions sticker. You will need at least a weight certificate to register the truck here. More information is available on the DMV website.

No SMOG testing.....YET!

If you buy new out of state, make sure the truck you buy has the california emmisions label under the hood.

If you buy used, a federal truck must have at least 7500 miles on the clock.

If you stick to this, you will have no problems.

I have heard all of Dave Smith's new vehicles are California SMOG....in case you were thinking of going to Idaho to buy.

Al these trucks are the same, the only difference is that Dodge puts a sticker on at the factory for a Calif. Truck. Nevada requires a smog test for Diesels, Not Calif.
