Angry Smog alert!!

I have a 04 2500, 4 X 4, that i bought new. Yesterday I received a notice from the DMV that a smog cert is required for registration. I live in California, where dielsels prior to 08 were exempt from smog requirements. There was a phone number includeed for any questions, which had a recording saying vehicles built after 1998 are required to get smog certs. Has anyone else seen this? Any comments?

My 03 was easy. You have the Banks like I do and I had the speedloader as well. Simply 34$ charge and 20 minutes because they tech didnt know if Banks was one of the allowed tuners or not. Turns out they aren't on the list for the Dodges but they are for the Fords, go figure. The tech made a couple of phone calls and found out that the state gives the mfg's 1 year to submit testing info to show they are in compliance. I was in and out withut any hassle.
good luck.

My '03 is not due until July of 2011. The state just doesn't have a clue.

My pressure box is hidden up under the dash where it can't be seen. Then it's just a matter of setting the Smarty to stock.

The truck won't be running too good that day.

This is REDICULOUS. I can't stand this state sometimes. I don't really understand the point of smogging diesels... I won't ever understand it.

Bought my '07 5.9 w/ 97K in AZ in May '10. Tried to smog check (CA registration requirement) @ Arco Smog Pros. They couldn't do it because they weren't certified for diesel; so I went across the street to the 76 station. The tech stared @ the Cummins emblem for a long time, as if it was from outer space. Then he started taking info off the engine stickers and stared @ the engine for about 3 min. /w a confused expression. Then he asked me if it was a V6 or a V8... When they do the 'soot test, they're supposed to sit in the driver's seat & use the mirror or look over their shoulder while they stab the accelerator 3 times. The first one doesn't count; but the next two, the tech has to pull an opinion out of his ars if there is too much smoke.
Even as un-scientific as this is, the tech didn't even do that. He had me stab the pedal while he stood 3 feet from the exhaust pipe. I had talk him out of failing it (..stock truck..diesel..test protocol..normal..). Next time, I'll ask my diesel shop to make recommend a tester.

The good far outweighs the bad..... it was about 70* today - beautiful.

I guess that's why they keep coming. I do wish they would get jobs though. We need the tax revenue.

Yep! Had my 07 5.9 smogged over summer. It took all of 5 minutes. THey 'look' the engine over to make sure you haven't deleted any emissions parts, then they rev it up couple times and ck for smoke. Hook it to computer to transmit to the state. I di NOTTTTTT have the recall done to update the ECM and the computer read it just fine. I paid $14 for the smog ck. I am here in Hemet, not to far from SD

so what happens if an out of state guy comes in to Ca and is blowing smoke all over the place. what kind of ticket does he get. or pulling a heavy load and end up smoking out the police.

like montana if you have any sort of lift on your truck you better have mudflaps. they love writing those tickets out.
