Silly question
Silly question
Sometime in the next week or two, I am going to be changing my oil and filter, and I'm thinkin', if I have to remove the hose and clamps that go to the turbo anyway, I may as well try and make my silencer ring go bye-bye
. Question is more of a logistical one than a technical one. For those of you who have kidnapped yours, especially on the 3rd gens, how did you actually reach it? I am literally kneeling (hurts my knees) on the metal that runs in front of the radiator, and still have difficulty reaching the hose clamp that attaches the tube to the housing. Any ideas would be great, thanks

I used a small step ladder next to the front tire.
Why do you have to remove the tube to change oil? I just come from the bottom to remove the oil filter. I bought one of the oil filter tools from Genos. Just wondering, sounds like a lot of extra work.

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

I easily change my filter from the bottom without removing anything else.

me too... the intake hose was removed only a few times [once to get silencer ring out, 2-3 times when fitting my bhaf piping]
I agree with the trouble in reaching inside the engine compartment to do things. I place a Fender cover over the fender, climb up on my old tool chest that I place right next to the truck. That is about 3' high. Allows me to reach over without a problem.
I have seen but not sure where a step system that attaches to your tire and allows you to step on that to get into the motor bay. Also have seen, not know where right now though, that connects somehow to the front of the truck, maybe via a receiver hitch and allows you access that way.

im pretty small so i sat on the fender and put my feet in the engine bay. also, slide a grocery bag over the filter before you unscrew it, catches any messy oil that wants to get everywhere.
I did not realize how handy a bumper and grille guard was until I started working on things under the hood. You almost have a catwalk with one of those things on. But a step ladder would be cheaper.
One thing I noticed... Its nice to take the duct off once in a while to inspect the turbo inlet.
I was using a piece of poo-poo Napa "Gold" air filter and I incidentally took off the hose to find some dust. Took apart the air box to find the **** filter was letting air by. Its good to take a look at things once in a while.
Also, a trick addition I'd seen at Geno's a while back was a front licenseplate bracket that turned into a step. I may just get me one of them, but if I remember it was like 49 bones.
I can do a lube/water separator oil service in under 30 minutes while the neighbor asks me questions about my cummins
