Shut off - no start - lift pump?
Shut off - no start - lift pump?
So.... the other day I came home and sitting in the driveway idling in park the engine just shut off. I cranked it again and it wouldn't start, I waited a little and second try she started. So hmmm at 97,000 on original lift pump I'm thinking my time is up. I had a bunch of stuff to do the next day so I took DW's car and told her the truck had trouble. Well... she took it on an errand anyway and calls me at work stuck on the side of the road. With few options I had it towed to the dealer this morning - they have not looked at it yet. We REALLY need the truck back asap for a 1100 mile trip. Now I'm kicking myself for not just replacing the lift pump sooner. So now what are the options?
Will there be codes if this is a lift pump?
Is this covered under the 100,000 mile warranty or is it on me?
Will they try to make me let them install a pump in the tank instead of just getting an OEM replacement?
Do I remember correctly I can get a plug replacement somewhere? (Gino's? other? can they FEDEX it?)
I'm thinking she got jealous and got even after I did this...

You can get a replacement lp from Geno's. That may or may not be the problem. Any codes?
97K is also a candidate to have your cross tubes to the injectors re-torqued. That may be the problem, if their torque is out of spec(37ft lbs), they will leak through the head, into the return line off the back of the head. This will affect rail pressure, and at idle, if you cannot maintain 3500psi(I believe), the injector solenoids will not fire, will also be difficult to start.
I would replace the lift pump, because of the miles, and re-torque or check the torque on the cross tubes. You will be able to tell right off if they are loose, and maybe only 1 or 2 are, but that will cause your symptoms.
You may also have a failing injector(or 2), but I would try the lift pump and re-torque 1st.

It is possible.

The dealers do not have access to the stock cannister mounted pumps and will recommend an in tank replacement.

If you are not converting to the in tank system then you could replace your canister mounted pump with a new one from Genos. This would be the easiest and most cost effective method since it would be a one for one replacement. I recommend you go with a Raptor pump on the frame and install 2 um fuel/water separation units as well. I have attached a link to the cannister mounted pump for your review.

Let me be a lesson to those procrastinating... I kept meaning to do this and never got to it. Now it's dead a day before we need to leave on a trip - dealer was too busy to look yesterday (will call today)... don't have the part to do myself. If the dealer will quote a reasonable price for the in-tank pump I may just buy it... but if it's really $1400 (as one guessed) that is a hard pill to swallow on principal alone.
