Shudder while towing with 6 speed
Re:Shudder while towing with 6 speed
My '99 has done the shudder since it was new with a heavy load. The heavier the load the worse it is. When I changed to the six speed and shortened the front shaft six inches, it became a little worse. I believe that it is the blocks spacing the rear from the springs. They are angled properly for smooth running, but when under heavy torque, the springs wind some causing a misalignment. Will it hurt the truck? I have 205,000 miles with the original ujoints, center bearing, and rear. The trans and clutch have been changed to upgrade. See sig.

Dixie Man,
Are you finding this only in the low gears, like 1st or possibly also second. It sure feels like something does not like all that torque when it is loaded. I don't pull what you do, but I am pushing 16000. It is very annoying for a new truck to do this that is supposed to be so strong and ready to tow this much weight. Again, so much for good testing under all circumstances before releasing the product.

Bob, I thought you got that fixed? Weren't you the one who got the whole new flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch?

Some gear trains have a resonant frequency down low that simply can't be avoided. I've had many trucks that would make a racket if you lugged them below a certain point.

His was more at the engagement of the clutch - - mine is after clutch fully engaged.

Re:Shudder while towing with 6 speed
Well, attempt #1 to correct the Shuddering Ghost is complete. It now has a new clutch plate. Here are the results:
1) Still shudders when hooked up to fiver
2) The clatter at low rpms in low gears is still there
3) The new clutch does not engage as smooth as the old one - - I am having to learn how to drive it again. (the CFO is now in therapy for whip lash
)
The old clutch was like silk - - this one has a tendency to hit pretty hard. That may be a plus - - we will see as it works in a bit.
If anyone hears of new information on the shudder problem or the clatter at low rpms on the 6 speed, plus PM me. Thanx.
