Question Shudder on engine shut off...

Is it normal? When I turn off the engine, it gives a nice shake/shudder every time. Almost like run-on with an old gas engine, but it only lasts a half second or so.

It's normal but if you keep the clutch pushed in while shutting down it makes it a lot less violent. It's got something to do with the dual mass flywheel....

It still does it with my DD. I thought it had to do with how diesel's work (i.e., since there is no spark plug, the engine just stalls out everytime you shut off the truck). I could be wrong, but I thought that's why.

I thought it was caused by the higher compression in a diesel? My 1st gen does the same thing, only with a little additional belt squeal to make it sound even worse.

All comments are true. That is just how diesels are. The clutch thing seems to help mine as well.

This is where the term "Dieseling" comes from for the gassers when they have that short (sometimes long) run on after shutting off.

I like it. It's like your shutting down a monster that just wants to stay running.

I've heard one person call it the "Wet Dog Shake"...

The shut down of the CTD acts like a "wet dog shaking the water off its coat".

Sounds like I'd have more to worry about if it didn't do it.

I know this is an old post but for imformational purposes:
Nope. I've changed out my dual massacred flywheel for a South Bend conversion (to single mass) and it still does it. It did however remove all the other vibration I was getting. The Dual Mass was toast, springs broke, flopping around etc. I don't see these factory flywheels as a good idea at all.

our 'little' Cummins has a 150 pound crankshaft, I think that has something to do with it as well. I have a 07 auto and it does it to.

I would suggest pushing in on the clutch while shutting down. This will disengage the clutch and transmission from the violent pulse created at shut down.
