Should a stock truck smoke?

My truck is stock for the most part. I happened to be steppin on it a little heavy yesterday and looked in my side mirror just as the truck shifted and I noticed a little puff of black smoke. So, at the next opportunity I took off from almost stopped, hard, and once the turbo really spooled up I saw more black smoke coming from my pipe...it lasted for maybe 1-2 seconds. My question; is this normal for a stock truck or is something starting to fail? I've never noticed it before yesterday, but can't say that I've really looked either.

thanks,
daniel

Mine smokes under hard acceleration in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. If I've been cruising down the interstate at normal speed for a while and I give it a little throttle to pass someone it will smoke quite a bit then also. Mine is pretty faint compared to my friends truck with an edge box. I think it's normal.

Mine is stock (for now) and it will smoke if I get on it.

If you ever drive at night, and have car lights behind you and then romp on it...you will probably see it pretty clearly.

I noticed it the other night as well. I gave it about 1/2 - 3/4 throttle and it was smokin away! not real heavy, but it was puffin' away. I only have 900 miles on my truck and its all stock, sounds normal to me.

Mine also smokes under acceleration. I work nights and find I can clear or almost stop traffic behind me as I get on it. Those not use to CTDs think my truck is about to blow.

Ditto. Last month, while on vacation in ME, I pulled out onto a 50 mph road with no one in site. Well, a white expedition must have been flying around the corner as just after grabbing 4th, I looked in my mirror and he was on me. I romped on it and looked in my right side mirror, when not only did I notice alot of smoke, but the Mrs. (who isn't a fan of the Cummins) looking in the same mirror.

"Did you mean to do that?" she asked. The expedition backed off.....way off.

"Stock for the most part." Sounds like a good addition for John Rodriguez's sig.

If I do it just right the guy behind me will dissappear in a cloud of black smoke. The truck is stock, it will smoke under load and acceleration. I thought it smoked too much, took it in they said I have a leaking injector. I have not done anything yet. Now after reading this thread it kind of makes me wonder.

My stock 05 started smiking a little while getting on it (black smoke). I know I didn't add any more fuel to make this happen so I checked my air filter. It looked dirty though I have seen worse. But since these motors are so clean now with the emissions. I decided to buy a AFE Pro-Guard 7 filter and it stopped smoking the second I put it in and seems to be a little better power.

TRIK396 - Maybe because the XZT box might be giving more air also along with the extra fuel. That is why your's doesn't smoke as much as when it was stock. I don't know, I do not own a Quad box.... YET.

Now granted, this beast is a diesel and they will smoke a little. But I noticed it did it more with a dirty filter.

At night when there are cars behind you start at 50 mph in 6th gear, and put to the floor until you reach about 75mph. Look in the rearview mirror there is a haze in the lights. It was very noticable when my truck was stock.

I always thought yours smoked like that due to being on the lift.

Less air up there.
