should be easy question about trans?

this might be a dumb question. if my transmission is a little bit low on fluid, lets say a quart. can i just put a quart down the dip stick tube to fill it back up? or do i have to drop the entire pan and add the fluid that way?

The dipstick tube is the intended fill point for auto trannies.
