Shift **** rotating?

I wonder if anyone else has this annoyance. When I bought my truck about 2 years ago the numbers for the shift pattern were right side up and cocked a little to the right. Little by little they have rotated so they are now up side down, about 180 degrees from when I bought it.

I've checked the ****, stick and insert and they are all very tight. Could the shaft itself be rotating inside the transmission? I don't see how that would be possible, but something has to be moving.

Any ideas?

I bet it is the insert. You can pop it out with a little screwdriver and put it back in straight. Be careful so as not to mar the **** or insert.

Use a small screwdriver to pry it out then re-clock and install it. watched the dealer do it to mine..

Basically the plastic of the body of the **** is pretty rubbery and stretches around a lip on the center section when you go to pop it out.

Go after it with a little screw driver and you will see what I mean...

I have heard this here before but this is essentially a neat feature built in to the Dodge's. This feature is the oil change indicator! One full turn and it's time for an oil change!!!!

Seriously though...most usually gently pry out the piece with a screwdriver and then use some silicone or glue and put it back in where they want. I heard once that a beer cap from a beer bottle fits in perfectly if one wanted a custom look.

Or better yet, replace the **** with one of these bad boys!! Order them from genos garage in a host of colors..... SWEEEEEEEEET!!!!!! My truck barely bade it home from the dealer and this was installed. It was funny watching the service tech try and drive it into the shop to rotate the tires!

once you straighten it, use a small dap of clear nail polish or super glue to keep it still.

or, ditch it.

Don't let any valets atempt to park your vehicle or they will be putting into second thinking its reverse and drive forward through the wall of a 12 story parking garage.

I guess I'll get out the small screw driver. It's amazing the little things that will drive me nuts and the big things (6 hail dings) that just make my truck more of a truck.

I just had my Michelin's swapped out and two techs were working on my truck. When one of them went to back it off the lift, he opened the door, looked in, then went over to the other tech and the 2nd guy moved it out of the garage.

I thought it was because it was a stick, but maybe it was because he saw my **** rotated 45 degrees and didn't want to attempt finding reverse.

I'm more thankful now after reading this thread. Like yourself, I'm the only one who drives my truck and I know where the gears are.

At one time, I loved those old Hurst T-handle shifters. Until one time I brought my Jeep CJ-5 (304 v8) into the muffler shop after installing headers. Anyway, I new the odds of somebody figuring out whether it was a Dana 3 speed or T-18 ( 4 spd) manual were pretty slim so I taped a note to the inside of the window. Wrote something along the lines of "This Jeep is equipped with a Dana 3-speed tranny" and wrote the shift pattern under it. The moron shop monkey jumps in put's it in 3rd gear (looking for reverse) and stalls it 3 times almost driving forward off the ramp into his buddy standing in front of him.
I just about killed myself running accross the shop yelling at him he had no business learning how to drive in my vehicle.

Had that guy known what he was doing, that Jeep WOULD have gone forward off the rack if he wanted it too.

His comment? "I was wondering who Dana was"

Moral of the story, don't let morons drive your rig or, keep the shift **** with the shift pattern on it.

Mine does it too. Guess I better fix it -- just in case it has to go on a lift somewhere. Connotaucarius's post has me convinced.
