Shift issues from park to drive
Shift issues from park to drive
Hello everyone - I am at my witts end. I know I am impatient but everytime I get into my truck I have to try several times to get the gear shift lever from park to drive. I know it has to do with the brake switch at the pedal, just seems it is not working for me. Is there a short cut I can do to eliminate this safety feature which was not on vehicles prior to 1990?
Could my switch be bad. I try to count to three but even that does not work.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Scott

Well, I found it... I was expecting it to be on the brake petal, but noooo... it's in the tranny...
I can e-mail it to you if you like, I have it in a word doc.
I could be wrong, I don't see anywhere that is says that it controls the shift lever from moving.
I'll keep looking, hopefully someone with an actual experience with this will chime in...

Assuming you are having problems out of park only, there are 2 possible problems.
The cable interlock switch which is down by the trans where the cable mounts. You might try disconnecting the shift cable from the trans and testing to see if it still causes issues.
The other more common problem is the detent ball on the rooster tail in the VB that controls the detent. The ball wears and lets the pin out too far in park and it jams. This is the most common problem and will require the VB to be removed to fix it.
