Lightbulb School'in / Power Project

I've been playing around with my intake a bit lately... learned a few lessons along the way.

1. DONT remove the silencer ring! forget about "Will I like the sound?" think about "Will I like loosing over 1 mpg!"

2. I wont be useing AFE filters anymore! for every bit of dirt they stop they let 10 times that threw! Factory filters are 0% restriction filters, AND actually do there job!

3. Rather than cut the X baffle out of your intake tube, Go to Home Depot and get a 5" vent pipe for a furnace! shortest one they got is 36" so your gonna have to cut it down in length, and you only want the outer 5.25" part of the pipe. I ran some clear sealant over the joint on the pipe and added a thin layer to each end where the rubber 90s clamp to it. WALLA! pick up (I'M GUESSING!!!) at least 5 hp for $12 dollars and you can switch it back factory stock if you ever wanted to! (warranty work, dont like the higher pitch turbo noise you'll get)

Thanks for the warning about AFE filters!
Just want some clarification...
Did taking out the X shaped baffle gave you more turbo noise?

Funny, I yanked my ring after a 2600 mile trip to Alaska (lotsa' miles to average fuel mileage) and drove back. No change that I could see in MPG. I hear what your sayin' about the aftermarket air filters. Seen lots of dirt in my friends intake. I think I'll just open up my factory box. I posted a while back in regards to cfm of the factory air box and filter. It seems that everyone has tested just the filter on a bench but not installed in the box. At moderate HP levels I'm still not convinced that the filter is a problem. However, I do believe that opening up the box some could help alot. I'm trying to locate a cheap vacuum gauge with a tell-tale to insert where the factory restriction indicator goes to check the factory box and filter for resistance under WOT.

One more thing, if you want a great fitting piece to replace the baffle without the poor fit and added noise of the steel eliminator pipe get and AirAid MIT. Beautiful "factory like" fit and very little added noise.

Just my .02

I dont think removeing the baffle added any noise at all, possibly made things a little quieter, but the pitch of the turbo noise definatly raises.
Thats a great idea with the gauge!! By chance the machine equipment I work with has just the perfect thing! (2" gauge with a 1/4" barbed fitting on back, and VERY sensitive to pressure changes) I may give that a try.
I agree on the box to. Problem there is though its really easy to use a 2" hole saw and open up the bottom of the box with a few new openings that nobody could ever tell are there short of removing the filter (done this on my ATV's and Wife's chivy (Suzuki) Tracker and it worked GREAT. Reluctant to do it with the turbo because temperature is such an issue, and your sucking lots of toasty air from the engine compartment at that point. I may try putting a thermometer up by the air box to see how hot that air gets. if all looks well the Cummins may be breathing easier soon to! (1 warning though, you open up that air box and you will see a BIG difference in intake (turbo) noise)

Got mine at Central 4 Wheel Drive for around $50. I know the price is higher and I too had built my own eliminator pipe. Being a street rod and chopper builder, I'm a fanatic about correct fit and finish . The AirAid MIT has the correct retaining lips on each end to match the factory grooves in the 90* elbows.

Now if I could just find a way to use a BHAF of other aftermarket paper high flow element. Hate those oiled elements ya' know...

Made my own ram-air using $4 part from the hardware store. I still have the stock filter, but I will go to an AFE Pro Gaurd 7 filter (better than just an AFE). Do you guys have any pics of your intake mods?

Engine breathes a lot easier and there is very little added noise.

Here is the thread showing what I did:

After looking at your ram air project it really got to me. I went out and started looking over how the box is located and how they left a nice open passage leading right up to the front of it... didnt take long! I removed the air box (EASIER THAN CHANGEING A HEADLIGHT BULB!!!) took out the 2" hole saw and opened her up! I tried to locate the holes where they would not draw the warmer air from the engine but just the cool stuff comming in from the grill. Got 8 2" holes in there and without a really, really close look no service guy is ever going to know the differance. you'd have to be looking specificly for the holes, and have good light or forget it. Between the 5.25" tube, cooler air, and the extra ventilation in the box I find it hard to believe there's not 10 HP there!
WHEEEEW HOOOOOOOO!!!
As I was snapping the clips shut on the box lid a hail storm started, so I'll do some seat of the pants testing tommarow, cant wait!

THANKS FOR THE IDEA!!!

Here's a cheap airbox mod that I copied. 4" drain pipe elbow from Home Depot. Cost - $4.47

Woooooo Hooooooooooo!!!
Just tested out the new mod.s, thing revs up as fast of faster than any gas engine would ever want to.
Actually runs smoother too. only draw back is the turbo is almost completely inaudible, you've REALLY got to try to hear it at all now (I actually liked the noise)
Truck runs AWSUME though! I've test driven 2 600's and have no question I can take them down in a race NO PROBLEM!!!
Thanks again for the GREAT idea!!
I'll try to get some pictures of the air box soon and put them in my gallary.
