School me on Shift Controller Please

Hi guy's I have a 2004.5 Dodge Dually. It has a ATS transmission in it. My question is where and how does the factory shift controller work. Is it a TV cable to help with governor pressure or is it different on these diesels. My transmission shifts fine when driving around but seems a little erratic when under more that standard acceleration. I have called ATS about this and they have never called me back . "twice" So I am here trying to get some info. Any help would be appreciated. Like I say it shifts good and solid but just a little eratic on heavy load.

On that year of truck it is a TV cable.

Define erratic shifting when you have it?

Erratic shifting when it goes into overdrive mostly jumps in and feels like it jumps out then back in. It also waits until 50 miles per hour when it finally shifs in od just regular driving.

It sounds like a TV cable adjustment issue. It could be the governor pressure solenoid and transducer causing you issues. What gears do have and how heavy a load are you pulling? I will get the quick lockup in 4th if I push it too hard while towing heavy.

What I am talking about is the 3rd, then 4th and a quick second the TC lockup.

This is not even pulling a load. It does this every time I get a little heavy foot. I really don't know the gear ratio but it cruises at about 2000 rpms at 70 MPH

I also have the aftermarket torque converter lockup controller on the truck but I leave it off.

Sorry about your trouble, but your post helps me validate my decision to go with Goerend.

My stock trans would do that. Like it can't decide if it wants to be in OD or not, conflicting information on lock-up or something. Not often, but every now and then. And sometimes it would hang onto 3rd for too long.... Especially when towing heavy, like it knows there's a load back there, and it wants to run 3rd longer before dropping rpm's.

Yea I honestly thought they were pretty good until I needed some advice. If you don't have a handful of cash they don't know you. I won't give them any more of mine.

You have 3.73 gears running that RPM. I run 2150rpm at 70 with 4.10 gears.

Lockup controller should fix the lockup point. I would back back off on the TV cable just a little bit and see if it helps.

Quick update , I adjusted the cable both ways and it really didn't make any difference. Could it be the governor pressure switch ?

OD shifting is purely under the control of the ECU, nothing in the hydraulic part of the trans has anything to do with it.

The gov solenoid and transducer can influence the shifting to OD but usually its all or nothing. What you are describing is a 3-4 shuttle shift though.

Did you opt for the upgraded gov solenoid with the transmission?

I really don't know The trans was purchased complete from ATS. I feel relitively sure it did.

Unless you put eyes on it to verify do not take it for granted.

Other than a problem with the VB build, thats the only thing that jumps out at this time that could be influencing things.

Where would I find a new one ? I figure I might as well service the trans and replace it.
