Running on 2 or 3 cylinders
Running on 2 or 3 cylinders
Driving home last nite at about 75 to 80 mph for 125 miles in my 2006 Dodge diesel 5.9. The engine lite cam on and the engine lost a lot of power but did stay running. It tried to pick up and run ok but but only for just for a second ot two. Did this 6 or 7 times then just ran bad. Acts like its running on about 3 cylinders. It didn't get any worse and I was able to get it the last 15 miles home. Did need to dowm shift (6 speed) on easy hills, sometimes down to 4th. Any Ideas of where to start looking. Help will be appreciated.

If you have code reader then pull the codes. Code reader costs $40 and up but unless you know the codes stored you will be guessing on the problem. I would say most likely injector or the wire in valve cover gastket has broken loose. Common problem bad connection taking out injectors. If you have ohm meter you can check. Digital type is the best to use. All injectors should ohm out the same value. Wires should have 0 resistance. Injectors should read .2 to .3 ohms usually. If injector read over 1 ohm or 0 ohms then is no good. Good Luck
Its been a while for me, but can't you do the key on, key off three times without starting it and reading the codes in the odometer display?
