Rough Idle

I cranked my truck to go for lunch and it started fine but is idling really rough. Making the whole truck shake. Seems to run fine when driving, only a problem when idling (in gear, n, or P).

Any suggestions?

by the way, I forgot to mention it didnt stop after warmup. Not the same as the cold start with white smoke and rough Idle for a minute or two. I have that too, but this just started.

Anyone?

Id get it to the shop right away you are probably have an injector going out and in most cases winds up causing enegine damage.

I had this happen a couple weeks or was it months on mine? Anyway what you describe (Whole truck shakes) is a sign of a fouled injector tip. The spray out of the nozzle tips is not fine enough. Carbon build up! Think of a slow burning fire that just smokes, black carbon, versus a hot clean flame. Yup she Starts fine and when you get going it runs fine right? So I"m in a panic, called my relative who has 40+ years diesel mechanic time. He said " I told you" Carbon will build up on the tips when the truck is not worked. Worked means running up to operating temperature (thermostat opens) and getting the exhaust temperature up between 600-1200 F. No short trips and cold multiple restarts. My relative warned me when I first got the truck to work it and don't baby it. At the time the job I was doing fullfilled that hauling/trailer construction stuff. Anyway job changed so my heavy duty pickup is now a commuter vehicle . So my solution is simple and fun although is can be akin to exercising a race horse. Get some howes meaner cleaner, stanadynes or fleetguard asphaltene conditoner. Powerservice didn't work for me by the way. Had been using it mixed with marvel mystery oil . Give it a heavy dose and run the snot out of it preferably up some long grades. I guess you don't have gauges so make you stock coolant gauge go past the half way mark. Good luck to ya

I don't think that star knows much. They helped on my 03 when it was broken and the **** thing after 2 mos is still not running. I really hope I don't have prob with the 05 but I get the white smoke and rough idle already w/2500 mi on it.

mines been in the shop for almost 2 weeks for rough idle when cold,,they still don"t no what"s wrong with it,,either this is a ploy to get me to buy a extended warranty so i can at least get a free loaner or they are really%!#%$&) stupid,,I"m telling ya,,I"m gonna think twice about buying another dodge cummins or no cummins,,,the only reason i bought another dodge is because of the 100,000 mile warranty,,but what good is it if they don"t know how to fix them? sorry for the rant,,I"m a bit right now

Brought it to dealer yesterday, they said "could not duplicate". Truck only did it that one time. Appears that all they did was check for codes. There was definitely a problem, but I suppose I will drive it till it breaks...I only have 22K on it, so got a while of warranty left. Thanks for the replies anyway.
