rotella 15/40

Just talked to an amsoil rep and when I told him I was running rotella he told me was the worst dino oil to run. I have read on this site that it was a good oil. How about some feedback. I am running it at present. Have 15500 miles on my truck, got it with 15000, changed oil right away. Plan on towing heavy this spring to make sure engine is broken in and then switch to amsoil 15/40.

I've had a PSD and now the Cummins, and the entire time all my diesel buddies have raved about Rotella. I have no fears about running it.

BTW, amsoil rep = sales person

Shell oil

I run Amsoil in my rigs for several reasons,
Slightly improved Fuel Mileage
Greater Film Strength
Less oil evaporation and better high temperature stability (turbo bearings)
Extended dain intervals
I have 20+ years of good expierence with it

If you run good filters and reasonable change intervals any oil that meets the specs in your owners manual will work fine.

Amsoils website has alott of good information on testing and product comparasons that they have done. Their testing does not indicate that anybodys oil is junk.

Oils

No problem,

It's pretty easy to start slamming other peoples products but for the most part manufactures are pretty responsible. Lubrication products nearly always meet the specs on the bottle, only independent testing will tell if the products live up to any claims of superior performance.
Good luck on your choice of lubricants.

I've run nothing but Rotella 15-40 in all my diesels for the last 18 years 240,000 miles on a 6.9 E350 van, 250,000 on my 93 dodge, and 25,000 on my 04.5, never a problem, i also ran it in my boat a gas 454 for over 500 hrs a year for over 11 years.

IT'S A GOOD OIL

I have never heard so much as a peep of negativity about Rosmella.

That's like a Dodge salesmen telling you how much Ford stinks.............wait a minute.............

Ford owns cummings anyway.

I've never done an analysis, but I have had no real reason to either.

I have always run Rotella. I started running Lucas with it about a year ago. I have never had an Oil problem in any of my diesels.

This is one of the reasons I will never run amsoil in anything I drive. Good oil or not I'm not running Amsoil as long as they're running their propaganda machine.

Not only will people tell you here about the hundreds of thousands of miles they run on Rotella, but motorcycle enthusiests run rotella for 100k+ miles too.

Stop right there!! What did you think he would tell you? He sells Amsoil, does he not? I'll bet he would say the same about whatever oil you told him you were using.

I've used Rotella for years with great results. I put 580,000 miles on my Cummins in my '99 Kenworth, changing the oil every 15,000. I have 510,000 miles on my present truck, a Mack Vision. I have a friend with 1,200,000 miles on a Cat in a Pete 379 without any major work done to it.

I have about 25 cases of the stuff in the shop. Yes, I use it in the Ram.

My truck has 33,000 on it and I have been running Shell Rotella since 15,000.

I change out every 5k (3 gallon size jugs from walmart) and use Fleetguard Statapore filters. No problems so far.

I sent my oil off to http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

I also spoke with one of the Blackstone Laboratories testing experts and he said that Shell Rotella T was as good as any, and better than most oils. He has no stake in any oil brand. He is just speaking from experience having done analysis' on 1000s of oil samples.

He also said there is nothing wrong with Amsoil, but he thinks these guys that go extended intervals on their oil changes are crazy. There are still microscopic metallic particles in that oil circulating through the engine and "wearing" it down. He recommends changing the oil no later than 15k no matter what brand it is, just to get out the old and in with the new. In his opinion the brand isn't as important as regular changes.

But I have yet to hear of an engine failing from any major oil brand, that was changed regularly. You will be fine with Shell Rotella T.

Moved to the ENGINE and drivetrain forum.

On the oil issue, I believe that as long as you use a API certified oil that labeled for use in diesel engine (the API seal will say CI-4, there is a newer rating though I can't remember it, maybe CJ-4), then you can't go wrong. Just keep up on regular oil and fluid and filter changes and your engine will be fine.

All I have used in my engine is dinosaur sauce. Chevron Delo 400 at first and switched to Valvoline Premium Blue. Both have gotten the job done for a reasonble price (I have paid 10-15 a gallon for either, just depends where I got it). Both have the "smell" after an oil change. I don't favor one oil over the other as the both have performed very well for me.

BTW here is a poll of oils that I posted a while back. Click here.

Enjoy.

Schaeffers is good stuff - better then most. and they don't "waste" a lot of money like AMSOIL trying to convince people
