Roaring Fan Noise??????

I am not sure but I think I may be having a problem. Four times I have heard what sounds like a slight Fan roaring noise at idle when stopped at a light when the engine is warm. Not sure that is what it is but something is going on. I have 270 miles on it. The noise gets louder when you take off from the light at a slow speed and continues for maybe a block and then quits. The engine is at normal operating temperature when this occurs. I also have had the Check Gages light flash for a split second on two occasions if that has anything to do with it. Has anyone else had this problem or know anything about it?

Since you are in a warm climate it is likely the computer controlled fan engaging. Those blades are huge. Once you are moving forcing more air thought the radiator then the computer shuts it off as the coolant temperature drops. Sounds normal to me. I assume you are watching the temperature indicator and there is no problem there. If you are concerned you can take it to the dealer and have them check it out.<br><br>Too darn cold here for mine to come on. I could live with the roar in exchange for some heat. ;D<br><br>Casey

Re:Roaring Fan Noise??????

Same thing happens with mine, sometimes it can be even a little bit toward the cold side and it sits for maybe 2-5 minutes, idling. Then when I get moving again the fan clutch engages and begins to roar. It just kicks on for just 15 seconnds or less, when I get somewhere between 15 and 20 mph it stops. Mine is just the radiator cooling fan and it acts just like my old truck did. For some reason when it is turning slow, the fan clutch locks in and as you speed up it slowly begins to disengage. Totally normal. You only hear it because our trucks are SOOOOO quiet! Don't worry.

Re:Roaring Fan Noise??????

:'( What you are hearing is the fan clutch.
It functions like a thermostat. When coolant temps get high
the heat from the radiator will cause the fan clutch to operate.
This engages the fan to cool the radiator (at idle or while driving) once the temp drops at the radiator the clutch turns off and the fan free wheels again. The sound is fan roar and it is normal. ;D

Re:Roaring Fan Noise??????

Is the fan controlled by the computer or is it just a viscous fluid type? FYI mine also &quot;roars&quot; when the truck is warm. All of my diesels have done this. I would say it is normal also.<br><br>Paul<br>'03 H/0 6spd quad

Re:Roaring Fan Noise??????

It is a viscous fan controlled by the computer. Previous years had a bimetal strip that was in the radiator airstream that conrolled fan engagement. If you look closely you will see a cable going to the front fan hub. Casey

Re:Roaring Fan Noise??????

It is a computor controlled fan but is it programed to come on with the AC clutch ? I got my truck on Nov 20 and put a winterfront on it covering the rad and aftercooler from top to bottom and I have never seen the heat guage move past the centre and I haven't heard the fan yet. On Feb 22 I am heading for Vegas and Death Valley with the fiver and I expect to hear it on that trip.<br>Jim O

Guys thanks so much for your input on this. I have had a busy day and just now able to come on line. That makes me feel better about the fan.<br><br>I wonder what it is going to do when it really gets hot here.

Re:Roaring Fan Noise??????

Looks like you got the answer to the roaring ;DAs far as the flashing light mine has done it 7 times(that I saw)in 11000+miles.Theres been a few on the TDR that have had this happen.Dealer put puter on it and it did not show anything. Then later they were told to unplug the ECM and replug. They did the connection for the dash too at this time.It has flashed once that I know of since then. Now there just waiting to see if a TSB comes out.I think its just some glitch with the puter on these trucks. But at least they have it on paper.I think the first or two times it did it set the chime off

Hey Ken,<br><br>The next time it does it, take a quick look around you and see if there is a Ferd or Cheby close by. That Ram may be getting upset by close proximity to contaminants and be getting ready to kick some tails.
