Replacement/Upgrading Tire Size

Good evening fellows. This tread is about the maximum tire size I can use for replacing my stock BF GOODRICH 265/70/17 LT on my 2006 RAM 2500 QUAD CAB SLT 4X4 5.9L CUMMINS, THUNDERROAD PACKAGE. As you all know this model truck already has a factory lift which is good enough for me but I'm not satisfied with the original tire size. What is your knowledge about this subject? Thank you.

i have read here, that going BIG on tires can cause many bad things. Like, but not limited to, low MPG, the DW, toasted unit bearings and ball joints. I am sure there others. For me, I am just thinking of 285's. You could probably go up to 315's. try a search.

Yeah, I know about all this bad things that's why I want to keep the factory rims of 17" and just go wider and maybe a bit taller. I have seen other trucks like mine with biger tires and no obvious mods and they look great. I bet the ride is good too and the MPG shouldn't be that bad. Thanks for the input.

I like the Toyo 285/75/17 I have been running as far as size. I am a little disappointed with the wear. They were great to about 20K, then all the sudden they really started wearing.

Like stated above, bigger tires will put more stress on the front end parts. I think the 285/75/17 is a good compromise. Right about 34" tall, not too wide, and they really look good on a stock truck.

I think 285's or 315's look great with 0-3" lift. I've run either of these on every truck I've ever had. I've also replaced at least one wheel bearing on every truck too. As far as DW - I recommend a thuren track bar. I've never personally blamed this size tire for any problems with one of my trucks. However, my mom's 02 2500 cummins has never had any sort of front end work and drives like a dream....... It's always had factory type 245's on it.....

Update

Hi fellows, I ended up buying BFG's from the local Walmart because they had them on sale for $225 a piece and they looked great/mean. The size is 285/70/17 LT and fit perfect on my truck. I was looking for a 305 or 315 width but the price was above what I could afford. I'm happy with this tires , the feel is great on highway at high readings if you know what I mean, that's where I do most of my driving, but the fuel consumption went down about 2 miles per gal after I used the Smarty PoD to adjust the speedometer reading for the new tire size. For 5 years and 75k miles BFG tires been good to me. Hope this help
