Recomendations for Differential oil brand?

Have a 2004.5 x4 limited slip. Looking for recomendations for differential oil. Stick with the Dodge stuff? I know it uses Synthentic oil but that is the best I can come up with. Looking for brand recomendations, like Mobil 1 or ?????

Pull 10K 5er 20% of the time, pull 2000# work trailer 50% and empty the rest of the time. Live in Michigan so have to deal with "Cold" weather most of the time but will be in Flordia Jan & Feb this year. Need to change oil before the trip. Hate paying the dealer his price but if that is the best way so be it, just wondering if there is a better way.

Redline 75W90. Get it for $7/qt from http://www.myoilshop.com/ You can also get 75W140 (if you tow heavy) for the same price. Whether you get Amsoil, Redline, or Mobil 1, they're all very good, but Redline is probably the best IMHO and is also the least expensive.

I used the RedLine 75-90, also. I got it for $7.00/qt., locally. I found the local, Phoenix, distributor & told him I could get it online for $7.00 but, would be happy to buy it from him for that price. He, immediately, agreed.

The Mopar stuff is made by Texaco & relabeled for Mopar. Sells for about $21.00/qt. I was able to buy it from a local dealer, that felt sorry for me, for $15.70/qt. That's still over twice the cost of the RedLine, which, is probably a better product.

BTW, their website is, www.RedLineOil.com.

The only advantage to using the Mopar product is that if you forsee a warranty situation with your axles, then having the factory stuff in there may be a good idea.

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up

I was going to use the Mobil 1 full synthetic, but at the time could only find a couple quarts available at the auto parts place. I ended up using the Castrol Syntec Full Synthetic 75w/90 gear oil around $7.00 qt. It has the G-5 rating like Mobil 1 an as is stated in the 03 owners manual to use, either the Mopar stuff or the equivilent gear oil . I changed it out at 15K and probably change out again around 40K to 45K miles. I'm not towing that much here lately.

I used the DC stuff and changed it twice as often as recommended. The gears went south anyway. When they installed the new gears, I provided the Redline 75W140. Have not had a problem since. I tow heavy.

Redline. 75-90 if you don't tow heavy, 75-140 if you do.

I use the same oil. However, I can't say that it is easy to find at Autozone or anywhere else. Mine is due again for a change and the local AZ store is out completely. They checked the Dallas Area and only a few of the stores had any....and then only like 3 or 5 quarts. I remember back last April when i changed out the diff oil....I had to go to 3 different Auto Zones to finally get enough oil to do the job.

I just wish they all would carry more of it and never let their stock run low.

Did mine today. Thanks for all the replies. I went with the Mobil 1 for $8.29 per quart. When I drained the old oil it was kinda foamy looking. Greenish in color and when I removed the covers they had a blackish coating on them which was easy to remove with a rag by wiping it off. Didn't see any type of excessive wear and all was bright & shiny. Rotated the axles and gearing looked like it had seated well, no odd wear patterns that I could see with the naked eye. I did not have any differental paint so was unable to check that way but other wise was glad I changed it. Had 25000 miles on it so I was about 10k late changing it. Saw many other G-5 rated oils but the only synthetic that AutoZone had was the Mobil. They did have some Lucas 80-140 but I didn't see an type of label stating Synthetic. It ws only $4.19 per quart. Stuck with the Mobil though.
