Is everyone still changing the gear lub every 15,000 miles?

+1 on the 15k interval. Do it on the front-end too.

 

I'm sticking with the 15k change intervals for warranty reasons. When the warranty runs out I'm going to 30k.

dealer told me first 15k on the rear because its a new type of rearend and they want to see how its doing, after that every 30k for both

 

For those who have their differential oil changed at their dealer, I would be interested in what they are charging? My dealer quoted $380 (four wheel drive). An independent garage said he would do it for $70. I have yet to tow anything significant, and I might wait until 30K.

 

They think their oil is better then most.
I buy mine at tne Auto Parts store for around $9.00 per qt. it took me 7 Qts for a 4X4.

$380 had to be for MORE then two diffs serviced??? $70.00 hardly will buy any of the synthetic lubes for a pair eaither.$35.00 a piece for LABOR is about what it runs in these woods.

 

Never changed the diff fluid yet. Oil sampled once and it was still good. 15k is absurd.

 

That was the standard service interval on imports and before syns.Then again they didn't pull or toat the weight these trucks do.

 

I changed mine at 15,000 and replaced it with the Mopar fluids. The original fluid looked pretty nasty. A greyish/green color. With that in mind, I believe the first change is probably more critical than the others. Gets the wear-in material out.

The second change was at about 35,000 and the fluid looked much better than the original fluid. I'm sure it could have gone longer.

This time I installed Red Line w75X90. I was able to get it for $7.00/qt. as opposed to $15.70/qt. for the Mopar stuff. The Mopar stuff was $21.00/qt. at all the dealerships but, I found a cooperative parts guy that gave me a break ($15.70/qt.). From what I've read on "bob is the oil guy.com", the Red Line is a very high-quality product. Probably much better than the Mopar which, I believe, is made by Texaco.

Go to synthetic fluid like Amsoil and make it 30,000 mile intervals. You should have no problems.

 

FYI, it comes with synthetic oil from the factory.

 

The oil I buy from the Auto Parts store is synthetic also., but it is bout $9.00 a qt.
