rear axel leaking gear oil
rear axel leaking gear oil
I have a smoking rear passenger wheel after a long road trip. After further investigation I found gear oil on the inside fender well and what looks like dissintigrated brake pad on the inside of the rim. Any suggestions? is is the rear axel seal and about how much to replace. I already know that I will have to replace the brake pads, but how about the real seal. Give me some input. Thanks.
A disintigrated brake pad sounds like a sticky brake caliper possibly heating up the rotor and hub. Maybe the excessive heat is what caused the seal to fail.
Did you feel any drag or pull on that side? Do you hear any growling or grinding like a wheel bearing is going bad? A leaky axle seal should not cause a brake pad to disintigrate or smoke to come from the wheel unless you lost all of the oil on that side and the bearing was beginning to burn up.
The only way to really tell what is going on is to pull the wheel and get a better look. Also if you can post a pic a lot of the members would be able to help you.
