Raining/snowing here and no start
Hey guys.
Dodge let me down today, for the first time. Around 50,000 miles, it was sitting in front of my parents place for a few hours, went to start it, starter will not turn over.
Seems like it has full power, everything else works, but the starter is not turning over. Its not clicking or anything, its simply doing nothing.
I let it sit there over night, its too dark/cold to see if I can figure it out, but i'm betting its probably the starter solenoid, or dead motor or something. I thought at first my remote start/alarm dissabled it, but I don't think starter dissable is hooked up on that thing. Unless it fried something, but i dobut it. I will see if I can get the starter to turn over tomorrow eavning perhaps.
Its raining here and the temperature is riding the freezing point, but generally there is tons of moisture in the air.
Anyone else have a similar problem?
Thanks.

Went to start it this morning (dried up), started perfect. Ran perfect all day and even started in the bad weather.
I'm thinking moisture in the starter prevetned it from starting last night. But that kinda bothers me now, gonna worry every time I wash it/rains out.

Well not raining now and it wont start. If I try to tap on the starter it wants to try to turn over then fails. Or get a single turn in and then fails.
I'm thinking the starter is cooked, but am worried the dealer wont want to fix it 'cause I have an alarm/remote starter combo, and an SFI flexplate. The thing with the remote starter I hardly ever use it.
Anyone have any clue what a starter would cost for an 05 cummins, and where is the best place to get them?
Thanks guys.

I would say take it to the dealer and have them look at it regardless. Unless the installation of the remote start caused the problem, they should take care of you. I know there are dealers that will go to lenghts to not warranty things, but it is worth a shot.
I have also read in the past that there are some wires that run from the starter toward the front that have had chafing issues. You might check the wires running to the starter to make sure there is nothing exposed. It's been a while since I've read a post about this issue. If I remember right, it was the wire loom that is towards the front of the motor. It is getting damaged as it goes under/near the radiator/intercooler.

Remote start has nothing to do with a bad starter.......will not affect warrenty............your starter has what we used to call a flat spot in her.....time for a new one
Well took it to the S tealer today for that and some other minor stuff, they said the starter tests good and the batteries test good, so they are thinking its the remote starter wiring.
Truck starts now, but it starts fine most of the time, and sometimes it does not. I've tried to bang around the colomn/under the dash where the starter is, and, i could not get it to start when it didn't want to. If I banged on the starter it would sometimes try but only for a split second.
What do you guys think? I'm gonna try to make an appointment at the alarm/starter place to see if they can check it, but, i'm h aving my doubts. I still think its the starter and I'm gonna be forced to buy one myself 'cause the dealer is a being a edited by admin. I know they should not replace stuff that is not faulty, but i am confident it has nothing to do with the remote starter anyway. I hardly use that thing.
Is this somewhat of a common problem with the cummins starters?

I have a friend who had a remote start installed, and he had similar problem.took it to dealer, and starter checked out ok. the dealer gave him the name of the electronics guy they use to install alarms, and remote starts. he took it there, and the guy found that the original installer did not do something properly to work with the trucks electronics. fixed it for 60.00. no problems since.
Check out TSB 08-021-06 at http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2006-index.htm if the starter draws more than 75 A too many times,a no start condition may occur and a code B2215 MAY be displayed, this re-flash is also the one for trailer lights to increase the current available.I think it will boost your starter current draw to 100 A.In a cold climate that would be good. When I mentioned it to my dealer he looked at me with a clueless look on his face.
Crawled under to take a look at that yellow wire going to the starter today, looks like the wiring harness has been taped after the wires leave the plastic harness protector to keep the wires away from that vent tube, must of been done at the factory or at the dealer.Bought it in Aug./06,A good thing to check though.
Go to a parts store and buy a remote starter switch... shouldn't cost much. next time it doesn't start, hook up the remote start switch and see if it the starter functions properly. If if doesn't its the starter!... If it does, its a wiring issue. Like Hairy said, starter motors can get "flat spots" or "dead spots" and if the starter motor quits spinning in that dead spot after a start up, next time you start up, it gives you problems. Also, check the normal stuff like battery cables being clea and tight, good solid ground, battery voltages....etc.

Igor,
If you need a new starter for it, the best place I have found in Calgary is the Alternator & Starter shop on Barlow just North of 58th St. It is on the East side of the street, big sign!!!
I used to have a F-150 that the alternator went on and they gave it to me at about 1/3rd of the price of any other place and it worked great!! Then I traded up to the Cummins
