Quick Disconnect on Trans Cooler

Anybody have any tips on removing the quick disconnects on the trans cooler? My brother is having problems with Dad's truck, he can't get the lines off. Is there a disconnect tool that will actually help? I bought some cheap Lisle ones a few years ago but ended up having better luck with just a pliers. It's possible I wasn't using them right, don't they basically clamp in on the two tabs on the disconnect?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance!
