Question about MPG's right after a rebuild

Okay so I got my engine rebuilt right before Christmas, bored .020 over, new pistons, rings, rods, bearings, the works. And 4 new (ish) injectors. Now I bought another work truck so I'm not driving the Dodge as much as I used to. I only have about 1000 miles on it so far, and I'm barely getting 15 mpg according to the lie-o-meter. I don't get it. Oil level is not high, oil smells like oil, runs and starts great, haven't burned a drop of oil since the rebuild, air filter is brand new. Now I know I have to seat the rings and break it in and all, but seriously what gives? I should be getting 20mpg at least, can I expect this, and when, and if not, any ideas?

Maybe the person that has the answer to your question hasn't come across this page yet, just be patient and the answer might be provided, just maybe not RIGHT NOW

With only a 1000 miles the motor is probably still very tight. I did not see good numbers=MPG until about 10,000-15,000 miles although mine is not rebuilt

The best thing for break-in would be hook up something heavy for a while. As others have said, the engine is tight. Just make sure that you dino oil in the engine to help with breakin. Synthenic will make the break-in process longer.

Depending on year of the engine, 15mpg isn't that bad. I only drive short trips during the week days with 34" tires during winter I get about 14-15mpg in my '05. Mileage is all subjective. It depends on how you use it. If you're getting 15mpg towing 6,000#s, you're going great!

Give it time bud, you have to start all over again due to a tight engine. It will take some miles to get it broken in good. If you tow heavy it won't take quite as long. 15,000-30,000 mile wait.

i just had my engine rebuilt spring 2009. i think i got about 15-20,000 km on it now and im seeing 16 mpg instead of 15 mpg on the lie o meter. i have all 6 new stock injectors, whistler intake, and run edge juice on setting 1 mileage. i drive nice also..

reason its doing this is very simple. its brand new and tight.

Just because the lie-o-meter increases doesnt mean the mpg increases. Try doing it hand calculated.

I know this has nothing to do with your post but was wondering how much did it cost to get your engine rebuilt? Mine has high mileage and the thought has crossed my mind a few times. Thanks

Hook it to a trailer with a good 5K or load 2500 Lbs in the bed and run it one way non stop for 36 hours (except to buy fuel, if you have a few hills or mountains to drive over all the better) and then turn around and do the same on the way back home, when your done you will have the rings well seated. IMHO its the best way to break in a diesel engine.
