Question about driving a manual trans

So my father recently purchased an 06 ford f350, and he has had numerous problems with it from day 1.
He currently has it up for sale, and we were a the dodge dealership this last week and test drove a 2006 mega dually with the 6speed manual.
I've had 2 auto cummins since 05, and am familiar with characteristics of the motor itself, but never driven the manual I found that the truck would shutter when I disengage the clutch between shifts. Is this normal? I also noticed the tach was jumpy at at 1 point reading redline and then all of a sudden dropped to real rpm (this is something electrical I think) I also saw it jump from real time to redline (for instance I shifted into 3rd gear and it read 1300 rpm then jumped to 3krpm)
This truck was a lariat loaded to the hilt, shortbed dually, his current ride is a larimie loaded to the hilt long bed dually auto.
I know that we are on the right track with the 5.9 dodge, and not necisarilly sure that this is the truck for him being that it immediatly threw 2 red flags, but I'd like to know about the shifting shutter for future reference.
thanks

the shudder could be a sign of the dual mass coming apart along with the rpm's could indicate a slipping clutch. does it shake at idle if so then its the flywheel

I agree with rich.

My truck does not do anything like that at all. 58k on the clock and shifts very smooth every time.

Does it have a clunk at shutdown? My DMF is starting to do this to me...it's coming out asap.

^^ X2. A shudder at stop to take off may not be a big deal as the AAM rear axle can do that and it's not bad but between other shifts should be smooth.

I assume the engine did not match the redline tach reading? The common rail can kick the rpm up pretty good if your timing isn't good. A bit of practice will get the shifts smooth by releasing the throttle slightly before disengaging the clutch.

Why the hey do they put the crappy dual mass flywheel in? I think my 87 Ford had one and they changed it the next year. Do the other 2 competitors to Dodge have DMF too?

Plain and simple, to stop gear train rattle. They work great on a stock truck.

My truck does not do that stuff either. Sounds like a possible clutch problem. I will say that a friends does the jump to a higher RPM between shifts sometimes, but that is more related to how the truck is being driven/shifted. If you are into the go pedal hard, try to make a real fast shift, the RPM's will HANG up there for a shor time, then when you dump it and are in the next gear up, the RPMs will again jump around. We do not have a blowoff valve that would let the pressure drop off quickly, so the RPM's do tend to stay up.

115K on my truck, the only time I have had trouble with shifts is when I screwed up. There is a know issue with '06 trucks and the tach going crazy. The instrument cluster has to be replaced. Mine hasn't gone bad, but I have read more then a few instances of this happening.

BTW, my DMF lasted for 90K miles with a 65hp chip on it before it started slipping. I returned the truck to stock and it would not slip even towing. At 105K miles I replaced the clutch with a SB Ofe and have no trouble with a smarty jr turned all the way up.

Right, and if I recall, you've stated in other threads that you routinely tow heavy. Far beyond the reccommended GCW by Dodge. So, what would you expect?

So, anyone exceeding GCW and/or running tuners has no ground to complain. There are reasons for the reccommendations. (and I really don't want to hear about " oh, but they can tow so much more, or I've always towed 4 times that and never had issues." Doesn't matter.

went to court with dodge i dont tow more then what they say the truck can handle want their laywers number. look around and ask the guys who,s dm have died and see if they tow as mucjh also. you mite tow 25% of the time with your truck where i tow 90% of the time with mine and the avg load is 14k on the trailer and trailer is 8k.
