I use my dually only to haul my toyhauler thats why it has low milage, My friends ask what I have done to the motor to make it run so smooth, I always tell them I use it for what it was built for.

Posted where??

The members that have egt probes before AND after the turbo say with a heavy load the difference can be closer to 500*!

Cummins said 1150* post turbo is approved?? I know 3rd gens handle heat better than 2nd gens but that still sounds very hot.
I'd be thankful if only the turbo is showing a heat signature!
I've seen them turn gold or amber! Purple must be the next level up.

I had a pre and post pyros. My numbers were around 150deg cels or less if I recall. Not enough for me to worry about.

But what I did notice was pre turbo would cool off much quicker the post turbo. I found shut down temps were hotter in the elbow then they were in the manifold. Which I found kinda odd. If your using your pyro for shut down temps then post would be my choice.

That's right, The Cummins engineer of 30 years gave me this info, His name is Mike Kell and number is 800-343-7357. He said he could not tell me what the max egt is for our trucks but did say I could run 1150 degrees all day long and that was post turbo were he said the probe should be. He said the probe gets way too hot in the manifold pre turbo and has seen many probes fail because of too much heat and break off and take out a turbo. He explained why with his engineering talk that I didn't understand. I put my pics on my firt post. I'll check and make sure they are their.

Those pics are crazy! Think what you wish... Maybe your cummins engineer will rebuild your motor on the cheap, but that dude is HOT!

I've ran 1200-1250 for hours on end hauling equipment or hay PRE-turbo and mine look brand new... I'd poo a brick if I saw my turbos looking like that

the 04.5 up trucks use a in cylinder egr scheme for epa emissions. in the way it works it gives a higher pyrometer reading than pre 04.5 and 1600* gives about the same piston temp as 1200* on pre 04.5 in fact it is a little cooler.

1150 translates to about 1450ish pre, which is what has been said is the max continous for the HPCR.. so that's okay, BUT, what setting was your smarty on?

That color change is pretty common on the HPCR, for stock timing.

Cummins has always been anti pre-turbo pyro.. but when was the last time you saw or even read about one failing? I will always run pre-turbo because its more accurate.

You have a 2nd gen, EGT's cannot be compared 2nd gen to 3rd gen.

Understand 3rd gens run higher temps, but of all the trucks I've been around that pull big loads on a daily basis (read: hotshot) no truck post 04.5 have I ever seen a turbo that discolored...

Yeah that one is pretty discolored... Makes me curious how the Smarty jr was setup.
