I really can't think of any good reason not to install it right away.

Bypass filter

I agree with the other guys no reason to wait to install, you may have to change the bypass filter more often initially but the break-in period is when you get the greatest wear and hence greatest particulate manner.

Personally I am using the Premo bypass filter; easy install and it has a clear hose I can see the filtered oil returning to the crankcase. If the flow drops significantly I know it's time to replace the filter. Use an oil analysis kit so you get the most out of your oil before changing. With synthetics you should be able to really extend your change interval. Good luck.

Why would you want to wait for a certain amount of wear before you start to filter better? If you plan to install a bypass system do it right away. Contaminants are always bad. Having said all of that, I don't know if it really makes any difference in the long run. These things are made very well. They are strong and built to high tolerances. They are under worked most of the time, and they are proven to run for a long, long time. It's probably a lot more important to do regular maintenance, like oil and filters, and treat it with a little respect while driving. Have you seen any failed engines that were caused by not having a byass oil filter?

I agree with Wetspirit. I don't really see the point of getting the bypass. I have no knowledge of any Cummins powered Dodge Ram failing from lack of oil filtering if they are changed regularly. But, if you are going to get a bypass system then I say go go get it right away and put it on.

Thanks for the Opinions I was wondering if there was a certain amount of wear that was needed to properly seat the rings and by installing the bypass system early I might inhbit that process that was whyaI had'nt installed it yet.
Well that and my recent experience with another brand of drive train has left me a little gunshy of adding until it has proven itself to be a solid vehicle so far 3k miles and not one trip back to the dealer, just as it should be!!
