Prepping 06 for winter?

Hey guys, I have a friend that moved up from Florida. He bought his '06 down there. It looks like he has to go pick up a cord for the block heater. Looks like it may have one installed, just no cord. I was wondering what else may be needed for a truck purchased in the south. Would it need a flash at all for high idle? I assume grid heater wil be there? Etc?

They all come with the block heater, but the power cord is an option. It will be cheaper at the Cummins parts house.

Other than that, I would think he would be good to go.

I highly recommend a winter front and maybe battery blankets if he's going to experience extreme cold. If he's come from FL, I'm guessing once it gets below 40, he's going to think it's extreme cold.

I love my winter front and if he wants the one dealers sell, he better buy now before it gets cold as they could become hard to find.

Thanks guys, read up a bit on the high idle thread.

Seelow, if you look at the side of the block by the oil filter, you'll see where the cord to the block heater plugs in to heat the water jacket. The winter front are grill inserts to keep the engine compartment warm so you have heat. The diesel doesn't like to make heat itl it's working. You'll see in your owners manual, not to idle for long periods (at least til you get the rpm's up) or wait for the engine to warm up for a long time. Just long enuff to get the oil circulating then get it working so it comes up to operating temp.

Also, you would find the cord clipped to the right side by the radiator supports, if it was so equipped. If not, there will be a plastic cap on the heater, over where the cord would attach.

I think most people plug in when it is below freezing. These trucks will start fine well below freezing without being plugged in, but doing so results in less smoke, quieter, quicker defrost...

I use a timer to keep the power consumption down.

As far as winter fronts go, a chunk of cardboard and some zip ties is probably one of the more popular options, with extra red neck style points.

If you have an exhaust brake, turning it on once oil pressure has stabalized will also speed the warm-up process.

Will it hurt to leave the block heater plugged in overnight?

The only thing it will hurt is your wallet. A lot of farmers leave their equipment plugged in all winter long for the just in case they need it type situation. I usually don't plug mine in until the nights are below 40. And even then I use a timer and set it for four hours before its time to leave. I miss my old PSD with its 1250 watt block heater, hot air from the time I fired it up.

Anywhere I could see some pics of it?

I'm curious how it attaches and what it looks like.

Cool thanks!

I assume the middle area is removable?

What does Dodge/Cummins recommed (temp etc.) as to when you should start using it?

The middle area is just 4 flaps that can be either opened or closed. I have them all closed on a cold moning below 30. But once warmed up you could open one to two up.

Don't know what dodge recommends but once the engine is warm I'll pull over and remove it if gets warmer than 45 degrees. Takes about two minutes to remove and about 5 or 6 minutes to install.

"Hurt your wallet"?

Wouldn't just cost pennies a day to plug it in all night?
