Pre-ignition or pinging sound
I have a 2005 3500 diesel, with 176,000 miles on it. I started having a pinging sound upon acceleration about a month ago . It would only be for a second, and reminded me of my old carburated ford V8 that needed its carb rebuilt. I inspected the air filter and fuel filter and replaced them, and ran some Lucas through the tank. It worked for about 300 miles. Once the sound came back I took it to the dealer and they said it was my lift pump. I replaced it. Still had problem. Decided to replace injector pump. Runs alot better but still has occasional Hic-up on acceleration and also has a pssst-pssst sound at idle. Trying to find out what this might be without taking back to dealer. Like I said 176,000 miles no warranty with that! Any suggestions?
I dont have any codes showing either.

It sounds like normal diesel clatter but why would it start at your mileage? I have noticed that mine does it after coasting down a long grade and the engine cools off. Then when I first step on it I get more clatter on light acceleration. I've also seen it on my old 6.9 when there was air in the system. When the tank was almost empty and I was getting air into the system it would get much louder. No big deal.
You should stay away from your dealer who just seems to want to throw parts at it at your expense. The lift pump is not going to cause diesel clatter. But some dealers just seem to have no clue about diesels. Scary.
It might not be atomizing as well as it used to and that could be fixed with a heavy dose of fuel additive. Try that first.
