Power steering homemade cap vent

Well, I've had it with my power steering not venting through the most wonderfly designed cap (yes, that was sarcastic) and pushing fluid out the top of my PS box and all over the driveway! So I came up with a simple way to vent it! I have pics and parts so you can do it to!
Tools:
3/8 drill bit
9/32 drill bit
Parts: (got at Lowes)
Watts Brass tube to MIP elbow w/insert 1/4" x 1/8"...pt#A-29....$2.78
Watts clear vinyl tubing 1/4" x .170" x 20'...........pt#42143220..$1.96
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just take the 9/32 bit and drill through the top of cap about 1 1/4" down. You'll encounter a rubber piece just under the cap you will have to yank out after drilling. You'll also knotice just under the rubber O ring on the shaft the bit will have cleared a hole accross shaft (pic-1) Then take the 3/8 bit and drill 1/4" down. Make sure all shavings are cleard. Take the brass elbow and insert it into the cap and force-thread it. anthe connect the tubing and you're done. Install back on PS pump and run tube to desired location. NOTE: Don not face end of tube up! Make sure it faces down! Good luck!

I don't remember seeing any threads about this being a common problem. Did you design this to allow excess fluid to be purged onto the driveway, or by eliminating the pressure there is no additional fluid lost?

I did it because I had a problem with fluid all of a sudden coming out of the top of the box where the steering shaft enters. Now every time I took the cap off to check the fluid it poped up in my hand with pressure behind it. Now I talked to a couple of members here and they concured that the cap wasn't venting properly and they had the same problem. Well if you look at the stock design you can understand how it can get cloged and pluged! My design hopefuly eliminate that! My seals are probably ruined now but, we'll see!

Good luck boss! I've been lucky enough that a cleaning fixed mine, but in the event that it comes back, THIS is definately what will get done to my cap as well!

Thank! When I was cleaning mine I noticed a very restrictive vent holes. So I did this to further prevent this from happening again and it didn't cost hardly anything and took literly 15 min with coofee and smoke breaks and watching TV! I'm hoping it's an upgrade in poor design! Like I said, we'll see!

Nice

Mine has been leaking too they also leak from the o-ring where the resivoir goes into the pump I read in TDR (don't ask me which issue) from vibration the o-ring gets worn I fixed mine with an o-ring from home depot and some right-stuff silicone sealer just incase but there was a part number and size listed in the TDR article about it. I think it was a 5/8 o-ring weatherhead part number 4629x10. so couple weeks went by and my resivior stopped making a mess then the cap started leaking all over the place O come to think of it mabee that's why the other o-ring leaks so much with all that built up pressere in there I nociced when I take the cap off there is always alot of pressure and the cap sort of pops up as you take it off. I will definalty do this little vent mod to my cap

As soon as my 3rd cap gets here, I'm doing this before it goes on the truck. Thanks dboss.

Hey I hope it works out for you guys! I'm surprized no one else came up with it! I'm still thinking to myself, "This was way too easy!" LMAO! For me it's so far so good! It still leaks a little through the seals on the steering shaft side of the box but, thats because (I believe) I blew them out before I could get my vent on. On a good note it doesn't leak nearly as much as it did! So, don't hesitate to ask any questions at all! Good luck!

87BGRN, Send that 3rd cap back, and modify the old one. I took mine all apart and drilled the holes a little larger, and trimmed the one way valve a little. No more pressure build up. Same end solution, different means to getting there.

So is there a difference between 2nd gen and 3rd gen caps? Just curious because I've recently had issues with the power steering fluid reservoir puking out of the cap.

Good man!!! As long as you get a good end result. Different variations always leads to better ideas! I just set the tone! Cheers

That's one way to do it. I went for a different way. I separated my cap into the dipstick & top cap. If you look at the top cap you will have a center ring & a raised portion to keep the "check valve (redish-orange rubber piece)" in place. I just took a drumel with a grinding stone to machine downed the rasied portion in the top cap for the "check valve". This gives the "check valve" more room to move up & down do to pressures in the steering box. I didn't drill the drain holes any larger. I'm assuming that it wouldn't be a problem unless I was overfilling the power steering box.

i think im going to try it as well when i take my cap off it sounds like a 22 rifle being shot from the pressure and im pushing fluid out of the power head on the fire wall. so maybe this will help that leak.

Another fix

This worked for me. My gear box and reservoir were seeping. Started worrying about the brake booster... big bucks vs $10 cap.
