Possible lift pump failure/no start?'s
Possible lift pump failure/no start?'s
Hello All,
One of my company trucks broke down today and while I am familar with diesels, the dodge is something I haven't messed with.
Heres the details. Truck stalled on the highway today and wouldn't restart. The fuel filter was just replaced two days ago due to a no start condition. The filter had around 170k miles on it to the best of my knowledge and was starting to cavitate.
The truck is a 04 model. I just checked the fuel filter housing and it is dry. How do I know if it is the lift pump? I called the dealership and they have a set up to replace it with a intank set up for $372. Is this my best bet or are there other options? They have this in stock and I need the truck on the road soon.

If you open the fuel filter housing and bump start the truck see if fuel flows in filter housing if no fuel than lift pump is gone. Since you have an 04 the pump is on the back of filter housing. Dodge doesn't sell them any more and does in-tank retro-fit in its place. There are a couple choices find a used one, get in-tank set-up from dodge, or put in aftermarket system such as a GDP or Fass system. I went to A GDP set-up for more reliabilty and if goes out again can get pump at any part store. The aftermarket system will be around the same price of the in-tank set-up but makes truck run a whole lot better. Guess it just depends on whose pockets the money is coming out of in the company.

I know that this is going to sound foolish but is the drain level closed? Then check to see if the fuel pump is running. You can do this by bump starting the engine with the key so that the engine turns over but doesn't start. If you can hear the fuel pump, you either have a pluged fuel line or the by pass in the pump is wide open or plugged prefilter screen. If you don't hear anything its a bad pump.
The prefilter screen will be in the tank.
From what I've read on this site alot of people are going with Glacier Diesel GP392 pump. If my goes out that is what I probly would get.
I have the intank setup on my '05 haven't had any issue with it. It runs at 10psi, but I put on Glaciers' big line kit from the filter to the CP3 (injector pump)

Does the GDP set up put a pump in the tank? I didn't see exactly what I needed to order on the website. This truck is used as a perk for a office guy. I plan for this truck to last a long time as it is paid off and other than the junky dodge front end it has been pretty impressive.
How long does the GDP set up take to install?
No the GDP set up does not put the pump in your fuel tank. You will have to find a place to mount it on the frame rail. Everything is included with the kit and it takes about 4-5 hours to install.
Here is a link to the fuel pump kits from the DTR store:

Here's a tip soak the rubber hose ends in hot water before trying to push on the ends.

on your company truck set-up the stock lift pump will be removed from the back of the filter housing. The GDP kit either the 391 or 392 has a billet block that mounts inplace of the old lift pump on back of filter. You then run hose of block to new pump you mount on frame rail. Can buy kits here on DTR or at the GDP website, but always good to support site. Kit comes with great instructions and are online on GDP's site to download to get and idea. Like said above about 3 hr install. Not hard at all.
