Daren, you need to get either a very small screw driver or something very pointy, such as a cotter key puller, under one end of the snap ring and lift it away. Then with a second small screw driver work around the ring pulling it forward. It's fairly easy once you get it hooked. Be careful to get any loose bits of metal out f the intake.

For what it's worth. THe silencer ring makes a definete change in the sound your engines will make. However, any performance or mileage increase is strictly imagined. The ring does one thing and only one thing, it quiets the turbo whistle.

THis is a real old topic and there has been endless debate over it. But it does nothing but lower the sound level.

I agree with you on the ring not adding power, and MAN does the turbo whistle when you get into it going up a hill!! But I have NO question busting that X baffle out has made a difference in acceleration! I've got 4,700 miles on clock and drive the truck almost 3 hours a day in traffic, so lots of stop and go! and the difference was easily noticable. I'm just looking forward to getting rid of what baffles are left in there by replacing the plastic pipe altogether!
Anyone ever run there exhaust out the side in front of dual rear wheels?? LOVE TO SEE A PICTURE!!! wondering if it can be done so it looks right. Thanks

I think I'll pull that baffle out this weekend. The ring stays in for me though. I spend a lot of time on the road and the whistle really starts to grind on me after a few hours. BUt thats just me.

For what it's worth...

Be careful with removing and replacing the Silencer Ring.

Atleast on my 98.5 hx-35....after I removed the Silencer Ring...I decided to put it back in because initially the whistin' got to me...

Bad move....unfortunately, once removed...it is NOT as strong as it was before taking it out....due to bending it a little to remove it....

After replacing it.....I barked the Turbo a little and Blew the Silencer Ring out into the intake hose....

I was lucky because it could have eaten the Turbo Fins up....NEW TURBO

Trust me if the whistlin' gets to you....you will get used to it...

In summary...if you remove it....leave it out....

B-Dude,

I read your thread and it's pretty interesting. I pulled the X baffle out of the tube today. I do not have a Post Hole Digger degree, IE: Phd, in air flow, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that you would have to gain something , perhaps only a millionth of a degree of better mileage with that huge thing out of the way.

I will be anxious to see if I notice any better mileage.

TurboPirate24v, Thanks for the warning, its good advise! when I pull my ring out I was lucky I guess, the snap ring popped out with about 1 minute of effort, and the aluminum silencer ring itsself slid out with no effort at all. I'll keep an eye on it for a while, but I treasure my mileage! so if need be I'll go buy a new one to replace the original.
Thanks again.

Dude, if you need a ring, let me know. I've got 4 or 5 of them sitting around. Happy to give you one.
