POLL: Silencer ring (I know, OLD topic)

Having read so much about it, I finally gave it a try, pulled the ring! While I was in there I noticed an X pattern "muffler" in the intake tube, looked restrictive... It's gone too!

Not entirely sure I like the new noise, sounds like an airplane now. used to have a cool Caterpiller howl.
I would say (just by the sound) that its breathing easier now, probably much more to do with the "muffler" than the ring, but in removeing the ring it seems like there would be much more turbulance going into the turbo now.
Any input here??? Thanks.

I've been interested in doing the same thing you've done. However, I'm curious how difficult it would be putting that stuff back. With your recent experience removing it, how easy do you think it would be to put it back if needed?

Thanks.

Why put it back? they can only void your warrenty if they can PROVE that the removal of the ring, and baffle tube DIRECTLY caused the problem.

Removing the ring , and baffle tube are the same as changing exhaust, your changing the SOUND of your rig, they have nothing to do with the mechanacle(sp) asspects of the truck

I removed the ring and sound baffles. I love the new sound. My baffles were cut out so there's no putting them back in. I think it's just there to deaden the sound of that sweet turbo. All I can say is "WISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHH" (Simulating sound of turbo)

Can one of you give some more details on the "sound baffle" in the intake tube? This sounds really good for making the system more free flow! Thanks

I didnt take any pictures of the baffle, but YOU WILL SEE IT! take a look down the tube when you remove it to get into the ring. The ring took about 5 minutes and its held in with a snap ring, so as long as you keep the silencer ring, and the snap ring you could put it back together and Sherlock Holmes wouldnt be able to tell you ever touched it.
The baffle on the other hand... I didnt want to cut it out because all little plastic chips that could possibly hide in there and end up in the turbo. I chose to do it "diamond cutter style" (sharp chisel, and a few well aimed taps with a hamer to split it). NO GOING BACK HERE!
Having done this stuff I can say I DO feel an improvement in throttle response for sure. I still liked the cool Caterpillar howl beter myself (just my opinion). but if its good for performance, the heck with the sound!
I would LOVE to see dyno. numbers on the ring removal! I still think taking it out would cause a ton of turbulance in front of the turbo.

I must be doing something wrong as I cannot get the snap ring out to pull the silencer ring out of there. I have not even thought about the baffle in the intake tube. Have to look into that next time the hood is up.

Leave it out. I've had mine out for 55K miles now. My turbo is still as tight as the day I got it. I used to push 35 psi out of mine regularly for over 1 1/2 years. It's not gonna hurt anything. The only thing it does is silence the turbo. That's it. Nothing else.

More likely than not I'm putting mine back in, I'm confident the difference I feel in throttle response is from the baffle being out.
Bugs me more and more thinking about the turbulance thing.
I COULD BE LOOSEING 2 HORSE POWER HERE! and the guy next to me would blow my doors off when we drag race up a hill with 16,000 lbs. trailers behind us!!!
Until somebody show's some dyno numbers I would recommend against pulling out the ring to anybody, I DO believe in getting rid of the baffle though. Your much beter off picking up one of the AFE (or any brand!) intake systems.
I already have the AFE drop in filter and cant say I saw ANY difference with it other than sound, ditching the baffle helped though.

I took mine out last night, along with the baffles in that plastic tube. And I have an appointment on sat to have the muffler taken out and replaced with a piece of pipe.

Took a couple days to get used to the new sound, and on the first drive after removeing the ring and baffle my truck would rev up and down for a few seconds when I was coasting out of gear, it only did that twice and since this I really do feel a difference in acceleration. guess the computer was figuring things out... but, WHEEWHOOOO!!! cant beat free HP!
My wife works for a metal sales place so she's hooking me up with an aluminum pipe 7" long X 5.25" dia. X .1" wall thickness to replace the plastic tube the baffle came out of, there's still rings inside there that cant be doing any good for air flow and I dont really want to spend the $300 for an aftermaket setup.

i removed the baffle tube, and replaced it with a hollow tube a member made me( thanx mark)....there are lots of ideas to use in there. i would recomend replacing the tube, instead of removing the baffles. Geno`s sells a replacement tube...a little pricey though.

The silencer ring is a piece of cake. It goes back in easier than is comes out. THe baffle is a goner. Once you pull it, there is no putting it back.
