Question Please read AND reply...

After reading another post about air filters, you folks have me a bit worried.

What air filter are you using and why? I bought a K&N and now after reading a bit, am regretting it.

Help me out. What air filter is the best for the CTD???

I have stock box and filter. With the triple dog I have never sucked the minder down. My opinion is the stock air filter breathes plenty.

I use the scotty 5, why? because i like the design, and had alot of good reviews. I've only had it for a couple of weeks and so far I think its doing what it supposed to (filtering air).

All other brands look good, except for k&n, i read alot of bad things bout them, i heard they SUCK (literally).

I've read a lot of bad opinions about K&Ns in diesels over the last couple of years but I can't say I ever read about any real problem with one. Oiled filters are OK as long as you oil them properly and that goes for any of the oiled filters. Too much oil and they will suck oil into the intake tube and turbo. Too little oil and they will suck dirt through it. I think others like the AFE Proguard7 flow better then a K&N but I think it will still flow better then the stock filter......
I've run K&Ns on all my vehicles for many years. I have an Airaid on my truck now and the filter is very similar to a K&N....

I have an AFE Stage 2 with pro guard 7 filtration and a prefilter. It sounds like a jet engine spooling and it filters better than the stock filter/box according to my Blackstone Oil analysis reports.

I also have the AFE stage 11, it has good reviews and the sound that the turbo makes is incredible.

I have been running the AFE stage II for about 20k now with no problems. I agree the whistle is considerably louder than stock and I did notice a little more power.

I had a KNN on my 91 since almost new but found a lot of dirt had made it past into the tube I also followed the oil and cleaning instructions to the letter . A motor will eat a lot of dirt before you will see the effects , no more KNN 's for me .

Thumbs up

I run the stock/modified airbox with an Amsoil filter. It works great, looks stock, and you can hear the turbo good. The filter was about $40+-.
Its a cleanable filter but you vacuum it, not wash it. Sounds easy enough to me.

I just put an S & B cold air intake kit on mine. I looked at their web site and they post their testing results. They use pro guard 7 technology, which filters as good as, if not better than stock, and flows 45% more air. Plus, it was 179 bucks shipped to my doorstep

Another vote for the AFE Magnum Force Intake & Torque Tube w/ProGuard*7.

I run a K&N on my 06 I was replacing the factory filter every 4000 miles the filter minder would be in the red. Can't say much about the K&N becaulse I only have 1000 miles on it. It fits in the factory box but it has a dish shape to it so it has way more surface area to it, cost about 100 bucks. I ran a K&N on my first dodge and a bully dog on my 04 all oil filters and never had a problum.

I use AFE pro/7. Because of information obtained from this website.
I use K&N on EVERYTHING ELSE.
K&N is fantastic filter especialy in harsh off road conditions, silt, sand, dust ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,. For some reason this site has for the most part been anti-K&N. I would not be afraid of K&N.... just my opinion after using them for 20 plus years.

The K&N website has a lot of information pertaining to their product NOT voiding warrantees, etc. Not sure why they have to defend the product so vigorously.

Jury is still out on this one but thanks for all the replies.
