P2146

Here recently, I have had an odd, violent knock, pretty much feels like the timing is completely off, lasting a couple of seconds, then the truck goes into limp mode momentarily followed by a CEL and code P2146 (bank cylinders 1 and 3 high or low), then the truck runs fine and the light goes out after a few starts. Over the course of about 2 months, it has happened 3 times and I am curious. Are others out there experiencing the same issue because this is a new one to me and if so, what was your fix?

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar experience, but my code was the next one down from yours? P2149? You might pull the valve cover and check your injector terminals with an ohm meter to see if they are around .5ohm. You might have a solenoid starting to get weak?

I'll do that. I was kind of figuring that it may have been injector related. The way that the truck sounded was that only a few of the pistons were firing and threw the whole balance of the engine out of whack for a few seconds and then went back to normal. I did have to have one of my injectors replaced a few months back because it was washing down the cylinder wall over night. Perhaps they didn't secure everything tightly under there after they were finished. Oh well, I have to change the oil, etc this weekend anyway. I'll just spend a few extra minutes under the hood.

Sounds like a couple cold ones may play a factor in my weekend. Thanks for the advice, woodrep.

I would be taking it back to the dealership and asking them for a detailed explination of the work that they did or didn't know how to do !!!!!

Of course we have; at least some of us. I had the same issue and it turned out to be a dead injector. If you are going to do the work yourself, send all 6 to F1.
Back to morning brew. . .

Hey guys,
Mine did the exact same thing a week or two ago. Check out my last couple of posts. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong with the truck. Well TODAY I noticed that the truck was a little low on power today and when I got home I could smell fresh fuel! Yep the oil level is about 3" over full. Well back to shop she goes Monday. I hope this time they'll replace all 6 injectors.
Good luck,
Topper

Well I just changed the oil out and it was all normal. No fuel smell and right at 12qts came out, so that's a good thing.

I haven't had any hard starts, no smoke at start up and the power is fine and dandy all day long. Just had a couple hiccups it seems.

Didn't have time to pull my valve cover today though. I'll hop on that tomorrow and let you all know what I find, if anything.

Thanks for the posts, guys! I knew there was a reason this was the site I chose!

My oil level was perfect when I fueled up in at my plant in Kingston. When I got home 102 miles later 3" over stock. There wasn't any problem with the way the truck ran but there has been a constant tick tick tick that everyone says "it's supposed to sound like that it's a diesel"...I have owned way to many diesels to not know what is a normal diesel sound. This is the second time I have had this problem last time they changed 1 injector. I hope this time they change them all.
Good luck!

When my injector went bad I putterd home about 10 miles from the house. I did immediately pull the dipstick to see if I was getting fuel washing down into the oil, but couldn't smell any diesel fuel and my oil level looke to be where it was 1000 miles ago (fresh oil change). Well, long story short I installed a new injector and went to the Speedpro oilchange shop to have them run a UOA on my oil and sure enough I had fuel contamination (wasted my brand new Amsoil). I did an oil change and am running on some Valvolene Premium Blue that I got a deal on so that I can get another UOA in 1000 miles for fuel contamination. My point for all this is that I wasn't able to smell fuel in my oil, but the UOA showed that it did in fact happen so be careful about your sniffer.

these motors only hold 12 when bone dry and that includes the filter.

I know. That's why I noted that I got roughly 12qts out of it when I changed the oil. I was implying that my engine wasn't being infiltrated by diesel fuel.
