Help! My wife's 2004 threw me a P2121 Code!

It wouldn't respond to the accel pedal being depressed at all, it idled along while in "D" and I pulled it over and turned it off for a minute. I cycled it on/off 6 times and got the code.

I turned it back on a few minutes later and it's okay drivewise, although the code is still there and the check engine light is still on.

What next?

 

I took out the EZ (which now my wife wants me to sell ), took out the boost elbow, put the stocker back in and drove it down the road. Still have the code, but the "check engine" idiot light is now off.

I've told my wife it's safe to drive and I'll get the code cleared next week.

Whatchall think?

well the P2121 code is
"Pedal position sensor performance/rationality"

I have no idea what that means but that's what the code is!!

 

Nothing is rational about me, maybe the truck just figured it out.

 

Typically in electronic pedal systems there are at least TWO sensors in the pedal. And the two values must agree for the system to be happy. The code sounds like they were *not* agreeing. And the safe bet is to idle.

Might check for dirty connections. Or the pedal sensor might just be going bad.

 

Is this related to the Dead Pedal TSB for the auto's?

 

I have to agree. May be the dead pedal syndrome. But, Dead Pedal also occurs in the 6sp. It happened on mine with great regularity.

At any rate. If it is Dead Pedal, they can reflash or do some other gee wiz thing.

 

I was hoping you could give me some advice regarding my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500. Sounds like you've been experiencing the same type problems as I have. A few months ago my truck throttle started going into a limp mode while driving. The pedal would be totally dead at times, like I wasn't even pushing on it. I'd have to pull over and then wait for it to kick back in. Sometimes this process was fast and lately I've had to wait as long as ten minutes. The frequency has really increased over the last week, so I don't feel comfortable driving it anymore. I took it to the Dodge Dealership and below is what they said.

Code reader said pedals or throttle. Tech found code P2121 for APP volts do not agree with idle signal and P2122 for low voltage out of the APP sensor. Tech performed test of batteries. Batteries failed. Could be batteries or still need APP sensor.

Well I declined repair because it was going to run another $844 for the parts alone. Cost me $300 to just diagnose. This might be something my brother could fix. I'm a little suspicious of the batteries failing because the truck ALWAYS starts right up, the lights don't deem that much when starting, the voltmeter reads at 1600amps. Should I really put $150 dollars worth of new batteries in when It seems I don't have any battery problems. My brother unhooked the battery cables and let it set for 15 minutes then reconnected to see if that would help. No problems last night, but problems started again this morning.

Also on a side note. Tech found a wiring harness to door broken and starting to break on the driver's side too. Don't think that would be related.

Could you give me some advice on what I should have my brother try first (pretty mechanical). What was the fix for you problems. Should I order a sensor or try to reset it. Thanks for any input you can provide.

My vehicle needed the apps reset and the wire harness repaired. Husband did it with the help of Timbo on this site.

 

Yep. the Original poster needs the APPS (throttle position sensor) replaced. I had the same code plus others, dead pedal, funky trans shifting, all because of the bad sensor.

2003-2004 and some 2004.5's have the Apps behind the bell crank on the side of the engine.

Timbo sells a sensor that is not a Dodge part and is far superior. http://www.dodgecumminsapps.com/index.html

The Dodge part is like $550 bucks. Its not hard to install and Timbo's instructions are easy to follow.

 

I agree. I had the dead pedal syndrom last year; always when the cruise control was being disengaged. I tried the APPS reset, but that didn't resolve anything. Replaced the TPS at a local shop for about $500 including labor. Problem solved.
