Put some fuel yesterday and truck die before I got out of parking lot. My first thought was to go yell at the guy at the pump about his crap diesel. But it restarted then stalled again. So I hopped out and dump half a bolt of FPPF in it. Truck start and i went down to parts store to buy some oil. On my way home the truck dies again coming off a bridge. I pop hood with key turned on all i can here is a real loud ticking noise. First thought is lift pump all done. I have it towed to the local shop and they take there sweet time to look at it. I get a phone call, Whats wrong with truck. I explain to them how loud I think the lift pump is and its probably bad. They say nope sounds fine. I hop in car and head down to shop. Sure enough truck starts right up and the pump was alot quieter. I did my homework on this site and read that some people can actually go weeks with pump on its last leg. They asked what I want to do. I ofcourse read horror stories about losing ijection pumps over this and tell them to replace it. So 400 later... was I too over cautuis? Would I have been better off going to down to the local strip club and throwing it away that way? Or was the better safe than sorry the best move?
To be honest, you could have added a couple dollars to your 400 and done a FASS or the like and been done with it for good.
To answer your question though, yes it was a matter of days before you would have been left or damaged the CP3.

Original lift pump went out last month at 58,000 miles. I had a spare pump under the seat and was running again in about 1.5 hrs. I did luck out and coasted into a park and ride area to change it. The interesting part is what I found when I took it apart at home. The brushes were worn down to the point that they locked the pump. It was just the electric motor that was worn out. The pump showed no wear and looked as new. The brushes must be the weak link in the original pumps. I don't know how these pumps last much longer than mine as the brushes are only so long. I had no trash in the metal pre screen in the pump and never have gotten water out of the drain.
Dave,
Sure you spend money on a FASS, but the best thing you can do is put a pressure gauge at the input to the rail pump. A guage will tell you know what your supply pressure is and that can change for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is a clogged fuel filter. Actually, the new Dodge supply pump in the tank is just fine. They are much better than the one the truck came with.
