anyone know off hand what the stock fill plug thread type is? from what i remember, the plug isn't a npt fitting. maybe bspt?
i'm thinking of a street elbow in the fill location.. would get that fill port to the same height as the top pto hole i think...

I don't know the answer to that one.
I have a 1 gallon gear lube container with a hand pump on top. The tip on the hose is small enough to fit inside the PTO cover bolt hole.

Get 6 qts of DC 4874464(I think), Royal Purple Synchromax, Amsoil MTF or similar. 5 qts of MTF (my first change) was $48 to my door. Pull the driver side PTO cover to drain and mop out all the oil. Reach in and get the flat magnet off the bottom and clean it. I drilled and tapped a drain hole and a place for a temp probe. My oddball fill plug is going to get drilled out and have a brass ell silver solder to it next. Craig

I think what Craig did was at first used 5 qts and then later on added the 6th to the tranny.
So your choices are for fluids is Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid, Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF or the factory lube from the dealer. You can get away with using Royal Purple Synchromax if not towing heavy. RP is a little light in the vicosity range compared to the other fluids.

I did a 4.5 qt change with MTF this summer. Two weeks later, I finally got DC to warranty the reverse synchro problem and they filled with DC stuff. Then I added another qt of DC stuff, last weekend. I didn't know that about RP - I'll take them off my list. RP Max Gear 75w90 was too thick for my NV4500 so I was hoping their Synchromax would be on the thicker side, as well. I get RP at NAPA - 27th & Thomas - I use there MAX Gear in my diff - great stuff. My Schaeffer rep says he has something that works in the 5600 but it's not exactly recommended by Schaeffer. I might look into it more and see what it is. I'd like to find something a little thicker for the Az. climate. Craig

I just drained the extra out of my tranny today. Seems it was leaking..... out the front seal maybe???? Anyhow it didn't do this prior to the overfill, so I figured I'd do the easy thing first by draining some out. Level parked her and drained out until she stopped coming out the fill hole. I thought at first it was oil from the blow by hose, but this fluid was very clear, like the Amsoil in the tranny. My engine oil is black normally. Didn't smell like motor oil either. There is a space about 1/4-5/16" wide by about 5-6" long on the front side of the tranny where the oil/lube looks like it is coming from. Any input is appreciated!!! Thanks.

Supa,
How much did you put in originally?

I'm at 6 qts and haven't seen any evidence of leaking, yet.

I originally bought 5 quarts of Amsoil MTF because the specs say the NV5600 holds 4.75 quarts. Well I drained the old out from the bottom PTO bolt. I didn't pull the cover. With the truck level, I could only squeeze in almost 4 quarts of Amsoil before the fluid was running out the fill hole.

Then I read this thread and I removed the top PTO bolt and put probably 2/3-3/4qt more Amsoil before it was running out the top bolt hole.

So my SWAG would say that I had at least just over 4.5qt. of Amsoil in there plus whatever remained in there by me not removing the PTO cover prior to me draining the "extra" this AM.

How much fluid remains in the tranny if you don't pull the PTO cover????

Shouldn't be much fluid left in the transmission when drained from the lower PTO cover bolt hole. That's the lowest point on the transmission.
I had to jackup the back of the truck to get 4.5qts into the tranny using the fill plug. I got the other 1.5qts in through the top PTO cover bolt hole.
That front seal shouldn't be leaking with only 4.5qts.

Thanks for the replies!!! I'll let you all know if this stops the leak. I hope it does. I really didn't notice a change in the way it shifted or sounded; I just figured that I'd try it out!!!
