I use mobil Delvac 1300 and it is about ready to change. The oil smells so bad, like body odor. I have no idea why it smells so bad, but the overflow tube just pukes that stinking smell when I shut it down.

Mine stunk with the factory fill. I changes it to Caterpillar 15W40 and the smell has disappeared.

Schaeffer's also smells pretty bad when it comes through the draft tube. It is worse on my tractors, it will about gag you when you stand next to them. But I really don't care, A) because it's about the best, most coest effective protection I can get for my engines; and B) I am not a baby, I can handle a few seconds of oil stink. I raise cattle--I am used to bad smells. If it were switching from one brand to another with similar wear protection, that is one thing. But switching from D1 to something possibly inferior (most oils are) because it smells like BO is just plain silly in my book. Are you sitting there wafting the smell all afternoon or what?

It blows my mind that someone would switch oil brands because of the smell from the vent tube. An oil should be judged by its' performance INSIDE the engine, not by the way it smells coming out of the vent tube.

To the fella that's gonna dump the Delvac 1 out of your engine.....if you have extra jugs that you are going to sell let me know as I might be interested. Shoot me a PM.

I use Rotella T 15w40 and it stinks. Great oil. The Dodge/Cummins system has a breather tube on the left side of the engine that will let the heater/ac pick up the smell. I got some gray PVC plastic tube, an elbow and extended it beyond the cab to remedy the smell getting into the cab.

What I meant by "change" was that the oil is about ready to be changed. Like new filter and drain the old oil out and put new oil in, nothing more. Not wafting stinky oil by any means. If it continues to smell that way I may change brands, but not to a lower quality brand, to see if it is the oil or my truck that really has the BO problem.

Been told the dealer has a additive so it smells like oranges I think.Amsoil 15w40 full synthetic smells bad also.On another note. Not every time.I think it has to do with which way wind blows and how fast you put miles on it.

Perhaps I have stumbled onto the answer of a question that I have had since I started shopping for a CTD. Several of the CTD's that I drove prior to buying my 04.5 smelled like they had a wet dog in them. A couple of them downright stunk. My truck every once in awhile will have the smell, but the sales told me it was a glue that Dodge uses. The other dealers actually detailed on the of the trucks trying to get rid of the smell. Is it the oil that I am smelling? I am used to it now and it doesn't bother me. I am pretty sensitive to smells, others don't seem to notice it at all.

Coming from a moderately bombed '99,I can't smell anything coming from my '07. A neighbor and '99 CTD owner remarked that he couldn't even smell anything remotely "diesel" coming from my '07. These thing run clean.
