Oil odor?

Ok, I have noticed lately when I walk around the front of my truck I can detect a slight odor of burning oil. I can't find any leaks from the top side or any oil on the ground. I smelled it when I first bought it but thought it was just all the armour all under the hood burning off. Exhaust doesn't have the oil smell but does smell a lot different than my 02. I can't really describe it. Any ideals as what to look for or is it nothing to worry about? thanks for any help.

My truck smells like oil after every oil change for the first 100 miles or so. If you can't see anything leaking, I wouldn't worry about it unless it continued 100 miles past your next oil change.

If you use rotella T, you'll smell it for real. We call it ro-smella...

Take your truck for a good ride, get it good and warmed up and run it a little... then park it somewhere that you know is clean. If there is a leak under it, then start investigating. If not, then you are probably good.

2 weeks ago I took my 2005 to the dealer for an oil change--when I drove off, I started smelling oil and noticed that the oil pressure was running a little higher than usual. Stopped and check the fill level--it was over full on the dipstick. Took it right back, they drained a little over an extra quart out, drove home and no more smell. Double checked the dipstick next morning, and it was right on the level.

I am running the AMSOIL 15/40 Synthetic and I can smell it pretty much all the time. Has been in there 3,000 miles or so... It's definately NOT a BURNED oil smell, just oil. I have heard this from some other AMSOIL users as well.

As stated it could be oil vapor discharging from the vent tube, as far as exhaust smell, it is different because you have a catalytic converter on it, has kind of a sweet smell to it?

Yeah Tim, that is what the exhaust kind of smells like, it just threw me for a loop since I run B-5 Diesel and got used to the smell of it. I couldn't think of what to describe it.

Does the 3rd gens have a vent tube set up like the 2nd gens or is it different? as far as location.

It's different, the tube does not have a bottle to overfill and is no longer on the front of the engine, it is on the driverside and dumps off straight down by the oil pan.

Same smell here, it's been ~3,000 since my last oil change and it's as strong as day one. I don't smell it inside the cab ever, but as soon as I get out I get hit with it. Seems normal, haven't had any issues or noticed any leaks/dropping/rising oil levels.

What is the TSB # for oil smell?

Took truck on some two track roads in deep snow and got a strong oily smell, still there, but we haven't had a warm period yet to thaw out...
Anyone have the TSB# handy? Thanks!

It's probably just your crankcase vent tube, get under your truck after it's been good and hot and you'll probably see vapor coming out of it, thus the smell.

Just changed my oil about 2k ago. I used Rotella 15-W40. Shortly thereafter, (as in the next time I drove the truck) I noticed the oil smell. No leaks, so I'm not worried about it. I'll probably go with Valvoline Premium Blue next time around.
